Maybole, eight lodges; Irvine, five lodges; Ayr, six lodges; Patna, nine lodges; Dalry District (No. 14) 12 lodges; Dalry District (No. 43) eight lodges; Stevenston, five lodges; and Kilmarnock, five lodges.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

A special meeting was held yesterday.

Mr Matthew Brown, of Parkend, was appointed chairman of the board in room of Mr Fullarton, resigned.

A committee was appointed to examine the site and prepare recommendations as to plans for a new school.

THEFT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday three boys from Main Street, Stevenston – PETER and PATRICK O’NEIL, aged 11 and 9 years respectively, sons of Elizabeth Lennon or O’Neil, an out-door worker, and HENRY MITCHELL, son of John Mitchell, quay labourer – pled guilty to the theft of peas and raspberries from a garden in Main Street, Stevenston, on the 12th instant.

The boys O’Neil had previously been before the Sheriff on a charge of malicious mischief, and they were all reported to be not under proper guardianship or control.

The charge was withdrawn, and they were sent to the Industrial School for five years.

18 JULY 1917

Died of wounds received in action, Private GEORGE BICKET, 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers – Theatre of war, home – son of Mrs Bicket, New Street, Stevenston.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“MILITARY FUNERAL AT STEVENSTON

On Monday the remains of Private George Bicket, 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, fourth son of Mrs W. Bicket, New Street, Stevenston, were laid to rest in the cemetery.

In the great charges on the Somme he was severely wounded on the 17th July, 1916, and after remaining in a precarious condition for one year and a day, he passed away on the 18th July, 1917.

He was a lad in his teens, and being of a modest, unassuming nature, he was a favourite among his chums.

Mrs Bicket has two other sons in the Forces, and our sympathies are with her and the other members of the family in their time of bereavement.”

STEVENSTON - PRESENTATION TO A LATE STATIONMASTER

On Friday evening Mr DAVID DONALDSON, late stationmaster at the Glasgow & South-Western Railway, was waited upon at the house of his son-in-law, Mr T. C. Kerr, Izaville, and was presented with a purse containing 65 sovereigns as a token of the esteem in which he is held by the traders and general public of the town.

The presentation was made by Mr Robert Main, of the Glengarnock Iron and Steel Company (Limited), who referred to the satisfactory manner in which Mr Donaldson had served the trading community in his capacity of stationmaster during the last 26 years; also to the town and neighbourhood in connection with the School Board and other public matters.

Mr C. O. Lundholm, Manager of Nobel's Explosives Works, followed with a few remarks expressive of the general esteem in which Mr Donaldson is held, of his own regard for him, and admiration of the interest he had ever manifested in all things touching the welfare of the community.

Mr Donaldson briefly and feelingly replied, gratefully acknowledging his sense and appreciation of the honour conferred upon him by the gentlemen there present, and the value of the gift bestowed upon him.

There present, besides the gentlemen named, Mr Patrick Warner, of Ardeer; Mr A. C. McJannet, Factor for Ardeer Estate; and representing railway station staff, Mr James Smith, Goods Clerk.

Rev. R. J. Kyd, Parish Minister, sent a letter expressing his regret that, on account of official duties, he was prevented being at the presentation.

CHILD KILLED

A schoolboy, JOHN TURKAS, aged 12, 38 Moorpark Road, East, Stevenston, was killed on Saturday when his pedal cycle was in collision with a double-deck bus near Stevenston level crossing.
