ROUP OF TENT GROUND FOR EGLINTON HUNT MEETING

A roup of ground for tents for the sale of refreshments during the Eglinton Hunt Meeting at Irvine on 8th and 9th April, was held at Bogside Farm, near Irvine, on Saturday forenoon. There was a good attendance of successful bidders, including: -

WRECKAGE WASHED ASHORE AT IRVINE

On Saturday evening near the mouth of the Gailes burn, a hogshead sewn in a canvas covering was washed ashore, and promptly lodged with the Receiver of Wrecks for the Irvine district. The value is estimated between £20 and £30 sterling. The marks on the canvas consist of the initials SDG in black ink and EP within a circle over the figure 5 in claret-coloured ink. It has evidently formed part of a consignment or cargo of wine.

On the Stevenston shore two boats and a quantity of wreckage have been picked up, but the names on the boats, if they bear the name of the vessel to which they belonged, are not yet known at Irvine.

The boats and hogshead are doubtless part of the wreckage of the same vessel.

THREE MEN SCALDED AT ARDEER FACTORY

On Saturday three men were injured at Ardeer Factory through the bursting of a blow off pipe.

It appears that a fireman was blowing off steam in order to get the boiler cleaned when the blow off pipe burst outside, and the steam came back through the floor of the boiler house, scalding the man in charge and two men who had come to assist at the work.

The men were burned about the feet and legs. Their names are WILLIAM FLEMING and GEORGE KILPATRICK, Thistle Cottages, Stevenston; and ROBERT PARKER, Canal Street, Saltcoats.

The injuries of the men are not serious. Doctor Wallace attended to them, and Fleming and Parker were conveyed home, while Kilpatrick was removed to the Western Infirmary.

PUBLIC MEETING

A public meeting was held in the Good Templars Hall, Stevenston, on Monday evening, under the presidency of Mr Hugh Thomson, joiner.

The proceedings of the school board were reviewed and condemned. Great fault was found with the board for refusing the use of Ardeer School for a concert for charitable purposes, and shortly afterwards allowing it to be used for a Volunteers Ball, and for the sale of refreshments to those attending the ball.

The system of collecting school fees was also commented on most unfavourably, and a deputation consisting of Messrs John McCaw, shoemaker; William Gemmell, tailor; John Reid, and David Baxter, foreman dynamite worker, was appointed to wait on the board and state the grievances.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

The monthly meeting was held yesterday – Mr Gavin Fullarton of Kerelaw in the chair.

A letter was read from the Rev. J. Treadwell, intimating the resignation of his seat at the board. It was agreed to accept the resignation with regret, and to fill up the vacancy at the next meeting.

Papers and forms from the Scotch Education Department awarding the building grant for the proposed new school were read and considered.

SCHOOL BOARD CASES

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Saturday, DANIEL EASTON, miner, Stevenston, pleaded guilty to having neglected to provide education for his daughter, and was fined 10s with the alternative of seven days’ imprisonment.

EDWARD HIGGINS, furnaceman, Stevenston, was convicted of the same offence and fined 20s, or ten days’ imprisonment.

STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

The ordinary meeting was held in the Kyleshill Public School on Monday evening – Mr William Lockhart, Mayfield, in the chair.

The officer’s report was read showing 944 children at school, being 102 less than the census roll.

A number of parents who were summoned before the meeting on account of the irregular attendance of their children at school appeared and were admonished, medical certificates being required in all cases where illness was alleged as the reason for non-attendance.

EMBEZZLEMENT

At a pleading diet of Kilmarnock Jury Court yesterday, JOSEPH RALSTON, junior, groom and gardener, Pollokshaws, pleaded guilty to breach of trust and embezzlement, in so far as having received on the 3rd of January last, from Patrick Warner, Esquire, Ardeer, Stevenston, the sum of £35 for the purpose of proceeding to Ireland to purchase a horse for him there, he went to Glasgow, where he bought a horse at £18, which he returned with to Mr Warner, representing that he had acted according to his instructions.

He was sentenced to the mitigated term of three months’ imprisonment – it being stated that he had already been two months in jail, and a certificate of his previous good character being produced, influentially signed, by gentlemen residing in Pollokshaws.

PARTY DISTURBANCE AT STEVENSTON

Yesterday afternoon a lecturer named James MacDonald, from Kilwinning, conducted an anti-Popery meeting at the Cross in Stevenston.

There was a large crowd, and some of his statements appeared to rouse the hostile section. The lecturer was asked to stop, but continued, and the crowd broke in and jostled the speaker. By this time the crowd had grown, and fears were entertained that there would be a serious disturbance.

The police were summoned, but the town force was quite unable to cope with the crowd.

The various factions came to blows, and as the Roman Catholic element seemed to be greater the lecturer was surrounded. He made his escape to the police station, where he took refuge for over an hour.

Party feeling ran high, and a free fight took place. So alarming did the situation become that the police were summoned from Ardrossan, Saltcoats, Kilwinning, Dalry, and Irvine, but when they arrived the disturbance had abated considerably.

MacDonald later in the day went to Kilwinning, accompanied by a body of policemen.
