The annual show of cattle and horses under the auspices of Kilwinning and Stevenston Farmers’ Society was held yesterday at Oxenward Field, Kilwinning, in fine weather.

The exhibition in connection with this society was held in Kilwinning yesterday, in a field at Union Place, possessed by Mr. James Hendrie.

The day being fine during the exhibition, the turnout of farmers and others taking an interest was much larger than on former years.

Land Slide Danger at Stevenston.

We learn that the Annandale Brick Company have made preparations to move the Redan Refuse Bing at Garven Road, Stevenston.
Some people think that they have begun in a very dangerous spot. that is in the top of the shank of the old pit that used to be there. It is possible that this mine may subside as it did some years ago.

Marriage

At Dubbs Farm, Kilwinning, on the 2d inst., by the Rev. W. Lee Ker, minister of the parish, John Lockhart, farmer, Hawkhill, Stevenston, to Ann, third daughter of Archibald Lamont, farmer.

Man Killed, and narrow escape of two others
About eleven o'clock on the night of Friday week, a sad accident occurred at the Redan Pit, Stevenston, through which a man named Francis Mullen lost his life. It would appear that deceased, with other two men, was engaged making some repairs on the slides of the pit, and they occupied a platform which was suspended by chains from the cage. While this platform was being raised by the engine, and just when it stopped at a point where alterations were needed, it gave way in the centre, Mullen was precipitated to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of some 80 yards, and was killed, his body presenting a frightful appearance through having been impaled on a piece of wood which fell from the scaffold.

The other two men, named Baird and M'Gowan, clung to the chains, and saved themselves by climbing up to the cage, from which they were conveyed to the top. The unfortunate man who lost his life was a member of the 7th Ayrshire Rifle Volunteers, and on Sunday his funeral was attended by 60 members of the corps, headed by Captain Forrester.

Accident.
Joseph Barr, shunter. residing in New Street, got his right foot accidently taken off above the ankle by a pug engine near Ardeer Iron works on Saturday evening. The unfortunate man, it appears, fell while attempting to get on to the engine. Dr Fulton was in attendance, and after doing what he could to alleviate the pain, Barr was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary. where it was found necessary to amputate his leg below the knee.
