MILK ADULTERATION

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Sheriff Mackenzie – Mrs. ELIZABETH SMELLIE or MILLER, Muirside Farm, Kilwinning, was charged with a contravention of the Food and Drugs Act by having, on 17th December last, in Dynamite Road, Stevenston, sold to David Andrew, sanitary inspector, Beith, by the hands of her son, 1½d worth of milk which was deficient in natural fat to the extent of 13.6 per cent according to the standard fixed by the Board of Agriculture.

She pleaded guilty.

In explanation she stated that owing to the explosion of paraffin lamp in the milk-house there had been three gallons of new milk destroyed and some skim milk had been added to the rest of the new milk in order to enable her to supply her customers.

She was fined in £3 3s or 30 days’ imprisonment.

ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday ROBERT HARRIS, labourer, Stevenston, was charged with assaulting Peter Monaghan, another labourer, in a lodging house at Stevenston on the 14th instant.

He pleaded not guilty but was convicted, and fined in £2 or 30 days’ imprisonment.

Harris seems to have kicked his fellow-lodger very severely and he threatened to murder him with a knife.

STEVENSTON PARISH CHURCH HALLS

Yesterday afternoon the new halls which have recently been erected in connection with the Stevenston Parish Church were formally opened. The main hall accommodates 500, and there is a lesser hall, session rooms, ladies’ room, and ante rooms.

The opening ceremony was performed by Mrs. Grant of Hayocks.

The Rev. R. J. Kyd presided over the meeting in the hall.

Rev. Doctor McAdam Muir, who was present, remarked that for the first time for thirty-five years he was again the Parish Church of Stevenston, and he looked round him with much emotion trying to recall those who used to be in that church when he was assistant there. He remembered many who were there then, but he feared not many were now amongst them. That they had succeeded in getting these halls built was a sign of the times. Few congregations looked upon themselves as being thoroughly equipped for their work unless they had not only a beautiful church but beautiful halls. The need of the halls arose, among other things, from the need of fellowship amongst members of the church. There was also a feeling that all life was religious, and that religion could not be served from our own secular life.

In closing he spoke of the great service the halls would be in carrying on the work of the congregation.

Votes of thanks concluded the proceedings.

Since last week’s report there has been 8 cases and 3 deaths in Stevenston, making 13 cases and 7 deaths in all.

The disease first appeared on the 9th instant.

ACCESS TO CHURCH AND WOODSIDE HALL

In connection with the church at Stevenston and the Woodside Hall there, the Commissioner recommends –

(1) That the Free Church congregation there shall have the use of the church upon Sundays up to 1 o’clock p.m., and upon Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1.15 o’clock p.m. to the end of the day, and upon Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; and of Woodside Halls upon Sundays from 1.15 o’clock p.m. to the end of the day, and upon Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays;

(2) that the United Free Church congregation shall have the use of the church upon Sundays from 1.15 o’clock p.m. to the end of the day, and upon Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays; and of Woodside Halls upon Sundays up to 1 o’clock p.m., and upon Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and

(3) that the expense incurred in heating and lighting the church and hall during the period of joint occupation shall be borne by the two congregations in equal shares.
