STEVENSTON SCHOOL BOARD

At the monthly meeting – Rev. Mr. Livingstone presiding – the drawing grant to Stevenston Public School was reported to be £27 4s. The probable duty grant for reduction of school fees amounts to £195 12s.

FALSE REPRESENTATION

Yesterday morning at a special J.P. Court, held in the Town Hall, Ardrossan, ARCHIBALD McLEAN, a mason’s labourer, residing in Glasgow Street, Ardrossan, was convicted of obtaining liquor by false representations from the Thistle and Rose, Hotel, Stevenston, on the 28th June last.

McLean absconded at the time, and a warrant was issued for his apprehension.

He was fined 25s, or 14 days’ imprisonment. He went to prison.

FOOTBALL – AYRSHIRE COMBINATION
KILBIRNIE v. STEVENSTON THISTLE

The visitors were short of two of their usual team, but they had capable subs in Somerville at goal and Hamilton at half-back, while Carson was an absentee from the home team, G. Todd taking his place.

A. Low kicked off up the hill and against the wind for Kilbirnie. Stevenston repulsed in good style, and made a vigorous attack, scoring five minutes from the start. Play raged in midfield for a time, then Kilbirnie made it hot for their opponents. But the defence was good. From a break away the Thistle right wing got the second point for the visitors. Kilbirnie now pressed severely, and from a pass by A. Low number one was scored for the home team by F. Watt.

The remainder of this part was equally contested, but no further scoring took place.

After the interval the home team started off briskly, and Todd equalised. Then Kilbirnie had it pretty much their own way, the match ending in favour of Kilbirnie by 3 goals to 2.

STEVENSTON HARRIERS

There was a good turnout of the members at the weekly run of this club on Saturday.

The hares (Messrs Ross and Brown) were despatched at 4.20, followed by the pack seven minutes later, paced by R. Campbell, with H. McMillan, whip.

The trail lay through the fields of Dubbs Farm, across the railway tracks, skirting the chlorine works, then on to the road alongside the Garnock by way of Ardeer Factory, past Misk Farm, Lucknow, and through the sandhills on the homeward course, finishing up with a nice run.

Distance 5½ miles.

The weather was dull and the ground soft from heavy rains.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday JAMES PATERSON, senior, brusher, Byres Road, Kilwinning; WILLIAM PATERSON, miner, there; and DAVID PATERSON, miner, Byres Loch, were convicted of trespassing on the farm of Misk, Ardeer estate, in illegal pursuit of game on 27th August last, and fined in 30s each, including expenses, or seven days’ imprisonment.

CHILD DROWNED

On Saturday forenoon a girl, five years of age, daughter of Mr. G. Armour, painter, New Street, Stevenston, was playing at the foot of the garden, when she approached Stevenston burn, which runs past, and the girl accidentally fell in. Her companions gave the alarm, but the child was swept away by the stream, which was in flood.

The body has not been recovered yet.

What was a brusher?

The act of removing part of the roof or pavement, either by blasting or other means, in order to heighten the passage into a mine, was called "brushing," and the person whose job it was to do this was designated a "brusher".

I had it my mind that it was some kind of menial sweeper-up, while it was really a job with some serious responsibility.
