FLOWER SHOW AT STEVENSTON

The annual show was held on Saturday in the Conservative Club Rooms.

Of the greenhouse plants there was a large selection, and cut flowers were largely represented, including choice gladioli, dahlias, carnations, &c.

There was a good supply of fruit, and vegetables were well represented.

The attendance of visitors was large.

THE ALLEGED OUTRAGE AT STEVENSTON

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, PETER BRYDON, JOHN MURRAY, and JAMES MUIRHEAD, colliers, Stevenston, were charged with having, on 10th August, assaulted Janet Dalziel, hand sewer, Schoolwell Street.

They pleaded not guilty, and were defended by Mr. W. D. McJannet, writer, Irvine.

Dalziel stated that the accused came to her house at one o’clock in the morning. One of them having given the name of a man who sometimes came to her house, she opened the door, and they at once attacked her in a violent manner. Her eyes were discoloured and she was severely bruised on the head and body.

The men had their faces “coomed.” She knew them by their voices.

Other evidence showed that Dalziel had given different versions of the affair, and had stated that there were six men, then four, and latterly only two.

Mr. McJannet said he had six witnesses for the defence, but without calling them he submitted that the evidence of Dalziel was contradictory, unreliable, and without corroboration.

Hon. Sheriff-Substitute Henderson found the charge not proven.

SCOTCH COAL CRISIS – ALLOCATION OF STRIKE PAY

The strike levy from England was constituted on Saturday in Woodside Hall, Stevenston.

It amounted to 2s 5d per man, but this sum was supplemented from the local fund, and the amount actually received was 2s 9¼d for single men and 3s 6d for married men.

The committee in charge of the distress fund have been collecting money in the district, and during the past week received about £13. Employees of Nobel’s factory contributed £7 5s.

Out of this fund the most necessitous cases are relieved.
