ARDEER BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Excellent weather again favoured this tournament, although rain fell in the morning, but it cleared up before play commenced. Players were slow in coming forward, and at no time was the green fully occupied.

SALE OF WORK

On Saturday, being the second day of the sale of work in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on behalf of the building fund of Stevenston and Ardeer Church, Mr. Thomas Thomson, Crescent, Ardrossan, opened the proceedings and warmly commended the object to those present.

Mr. Campbell, writer, occupied the chair.

The drawings on the first day amounted to £312. There was a good attendance throughout the day, and business proceeded briskly. The town was thronged with visitors, many of whom visited the sale, where a variety of entertainments were given at intervals.

£312 in the 1890 seemed to be a lot of money. I tried finding a comparison for today....."In other words, £1,000 in 1890 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £122,147.73 in 201]" Given that comparison they did all right getting £312!

When I saw your figures I began to doubt mine, but, having double-checked it they definitely made £312.

I also checked the 'UK Inflation Indicator' which says that inflation between 1 January 1890 and 31 December 2018, converts £312 to £39,056, which, I think, more or less agrees with your own arithmetic.

Very interesting.

ARDEER BOWLING TOURNAMENT

Yesterday the tournament was favoured with beautiful weather, and the green, freshened by recent showers, was in capital order and pretty keen.

Players were slow in coming forward in the early part of the day, but the afternoon saw a great change as the rinks filled up, and some interesting contests were witnessed.
