CASUALTY OF WAR
25 SEPTEMBER 1915

Died on service, Lance Corporal ROBERT CONN, (22), 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Mr John Conn, Bog Green Cottage, Stevenston.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

"Mr John Conn, railway contractor, Bog Green Cottage, Stevenston, has received intimation from the War Office that his son Robert, who was reported as missing on 25th September, 1915, must now be assumed to have been killed.

Bob was a sturdy type, and one who, in the old style of battle, hand to hand, would have taken some stopping; but under modern conditions the battle is not always to the strong.

After enlistment he was despatched to France with seven weeks’ training, and was wounded in the face in six weeks.

After recovering he again left for France, and since 25th September his father and relatives have hoped, but fate is apparently against them. Time has perhaps soothed the wounded hearts but nevertheless the sense of loss is ever present.

Our sympathies are with Mr Conn and family at this time."

Died on service, Corporal JAMES ANDERSON NORWOOD, (22), 9TH Battalion Black Watch – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Agnes and the late James Norwood, 111 New Street, Stevenston.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Mrs Norwood, 111 New Street, Stevenston, has received official intimation that her son, Corporal James A. Norwood, Black Watch, reported as missing on 25th September, 1915, may now be considered killed on that date.

Loos was fatal to a number of our gallant Scots, who paid the penalty of a so-called advance.

War is no respecter of persons, the widow’s son or the peer’s son fall side by side.

Our sympathies are with the bereaved.”
