LANDWARD AREA MAY BECOME BURGH
ELECTORS TO DECIDE

The local government electors in Stevenston were granted permission yesterday by Sheriff J. F. Gordon Thomson. QC, at Kilmarnock to meet on Wednesday, April 16, to decide whether or not they should become a burgh.

This was the third attempt to have Stevenston formed into a burgh, prior applications in 1904 and 1927 having been unsuccessful.

SCHOOL DINNER LADY RETIRES

Last Friday Mrs Elizabeth Plenderleith retired after more than 30 years in the school meals service.

Nearly half of that time was spent in Ardeer Primary School, Stevenston. On Tuesday afternoon ( 28th March) , as a token of their gratitude, Andrew McBlain, the oldest boy having school dinners, presented a weekend case on behalf of all the pupils of the school. This was followed by a spray of flowers, presented by Gwen McLelland, the youngest girl in the school.

Mrs Plenderleith expressed her appreciation of the gifts received.

After the dismissal of the children there was a further presentation to Mrs Plenderleith from the staff, of a purse containing notes.

Mrs Plenderleith thanked the staff for the gift and for their good wishes.

GLASGOW HERALD
9 APRIL 1913

A TRAGIC MISTAKE

Yesterday morning about one o’clock a distressing accident occurred at East Pit, Ardeer Colliery, Stevenston, a pitheadman named Edward Dale, (15), who resided with his father at Quay Street, Saltcoats, was running a hutch to the top of the shaft in the belief that the cage was there. The cage at that time was at the bottom of the pit, and both man and hutch were precipitated over the shaft and fell a distance of 108 feet. The man was instantly killed.

23RD APRIL 1949

This one doesn't belong to any particular town; so I'm including it under all of them. And I'm sure it will raise fond memories among those who were around at the time.

Sweet rationing ended last Saturday ( 23rd April ) and on Sunday local confectioners and cafes were virtually sold out of their stocks.

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald, 29th April 1949

Important PS: it's now been drawn to my attention that sweet rationing in fact officially ended in February 1953; so what this Herald Files was referring to is a mystery. Unless perhaps they lifted the rationing and then imposed it again later ? Apologies anyway for the " error " !

Susan,
I remember buying my first sweets without coupons at the cafe next to the Lyric picture house. I think it was called the Windsor Cafe but I also remember it being called the Mecca Cafe. There's been a few soor plooms bought since then and more than a few inches gained. //funny

STEVENSTON - A BOY SHOT

A boy was shot here on Tuesday evening last while a detachment of the 7th Company (Saltcoats and Stevenston) Ayrshire Rifle Volunteers were engaged in shooting at the targets.

They commenced to shoot a little after 7 o'clock, and only fired five rounds each, when they proceeded to leave the ground. They then learned from a boy that another boy was lying behind the target shot. It turned out to be too true. The two boys had been playing at the "bools" on the sands, about 230 yards behind the target. The one who gave the alarms says that he felt one of the balls strike his jacket and immediately after his companion cried out, "Oh Matthew, what's this?" and expired. The ball had entered his breast and went out by the shoulder. Deceased was seven years of age, and the son of a labourer named James Moodie.

No blame can be attached to the riflemen, as they were provided with a marksman; and used the customary danger signals.

The case has been reported to the procurator fiscal.
