Final tie for Lord Eglinton’s Cup

This match was played at Eglinton Castle on Saturday, the Eglinton winning by an innings and 30 runs.

The Ardrossan team comprised – Stevens, Wilson, Boyd, Patrick, W. Ellis, Barclay, Hogarth, Stewart, G. Ellis, Lipscomb, and Douglas.

BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY AT ARDROSSAN

The inquiry into the loss of the barque CLAROVINE which was stranded on the Heads of Ayr on 26th June last, was resumed on Saturday.

The Court adjourned till Monday, when agents will be heard and a decision given.

ARDROSSAN POLICE COMMISSIONERS

The monthly meeting of the Police Commissioners was held on Monday evening – Provost Barr presiding.

A letter was read from Mr A. G. MacDonald, Crescent, asking the Commissioners to reconsider a previous resolution not to light the street lamps during the summer months.

After some discussion, it was resolved to write Mr MacDonald informing him that the Commissioners saw no reason to alter their previous resolution on this subject.

The treasurer’s books and accounts were found correct, and signed by the chairman and clerk.

The chairman referred to the loss which the Commissioners had sustained through the death of Captain Goodwin. Although he had only been a short time a Commissioner he had discharged his duties faithfully and well, and he was sure the Commissioners deeply regretted the loss of his valuable services. He proposed that a resolution of condolence be drawn up and an excerpt forwarded to Mrs Goodwin. This was seconded by Mr Anderson, and agreed to.

It was resolved to delay consideration of electing a successor to Captain Goodwin till the next meeting.

The sanitary inspector reported that the condition of the town was satisfactory.

CASUALTY OF WAR
16 JULY 1916

Died on service, Lance Corporal JOHN McDOUGALL, (22), 9th Battalion Highland Light Infantry – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – enlisted at Ardrossan.

ARDROSSAN WOMAN KILLED ON ROAD

Mrs Bessie Shedden, aged about 55, Crawford Lodge, Ardrossan, was killed yesterday when she was struck by a car while crossing the road outside her home.

The accident occurred between Ardrossan and West Kilbride and is the second fatal accident to occur at this point in less than a month.

BAZAAR AT ARDROSSAN

The bazaar on behalf of West Kilbride U.P. Manse Fund was opened yesterday by the Rev. Mr Balderston.

The attendance of visitors during the day was not so large as on Thursday, and the total sum realised up to the time our parcel was despatched amounted to a little over £250.

A considerable quantity of very fine articles still remains unsold.

BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY AT ARDROSSAN

The Court delivered judgment yesterday in the inquiry as to the stranding of the CLAROVINE on the Heads of Ayr on 26th June.

Mr Bailey read the finding of the Court as follows: -

“After careful consideration of the evidence adduced, which as regards time and distance, is very conflicting, and hearing parties’ prosecutors, find that the CLAROVINE stranded in consequence of being kept too close inshore, whereby, when it became inevitably necessary to tack to prevent her going on the rocks, she became unmanageable owing to the buffing of the wind caused by close proximity to the high lands of the Heads of Ayr, and that the master David Jones, erred in judgment in keeping her so long on the starboard tack.

The Court returns his certificate to him, but admonish him to be more careful in future.

No charge having been made against the mate, his certificate is also returned.”
