ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Thursday evening – Provost Barr presiding.

The examinations were reported to have passed off successfully.

The Clerk reported that Mr James Neil had accepted the appointment of assistant teacher in No. 2 School, at a salary of £55 per annum.

ARDROSSAN HARBOUR COMPANY

Though, as appears from the directors’ report, a large part of the harbour is still closed to admit of improvements, the preference shareholders have been paid in full without falling back on Lord Eglinton’s guarantee, and his Lordship has been paid his full dividend in preference stock.

The Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway will be opened soon for goods and mineral traffic, and a connection will be given to the old harbour so that traffic will be opened before the new dock and pier are finished.

Dissatisfied with the rate of speed of the contractor, the directors have urged on Mr Erskine Wemyss of Wemyss, one of the parties to the contract, to expedite the completion of Montgomerie Pier, so as to make it available for Messrs Burns’s daylight service to Belfast, which they have undertaken to supply. The general public will then have great facilities, as regards speed and comfort, for visiting Ireland. They expect also to improve and extend the Arran service, and to open the new dock by May.

DISMISSAL OF A TEACHER

The School Board of Ardrossan have for several years been on very unpleasant terms with Mr Charles Marshall, teacher in one of the Saltcoats schools, and have on more than one occasion dismissed him from their service. Hitherto, however, the Edinburgh Board have declined to endorse the action of the local board, but they have now done so, as the following document shows: -

“Board of Education for Scotland, at Edinburgh, the 29th day of June, 1877, having read and considered a judgment, dated 10th May, 1877, of the School Board of the parish of Ardrossan, in terms of the Education (Scotland) act, 1872, removing Mr Charles Marshall, teacher, of the Saltcoats Public School, from his office as teacher of the said school, with the relative report by Her Majesty’s Inspector, statement or minute of remarks by the said Charles Marshall, and whole or other documents, the Board of Education for Scotland, by virtue and in exercise of the powers in them vested under the said Act, have confirmed and do hereby confirm the aforesaid judgment of the said school board, so far as regard the removal from office of the said Charles Marshall."

BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY

The inquiry into the loss of the barque CLAROVINE, which was stranded on the Heads of Ayr on 26th June last, was resumed at Ardrossan yesterday, the Court being constituted the same as on the previous day.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening – Provost Hogarth presiding.

The Works Committee reported certain repairs on drains in the town.

A letter was read from the cleansing contractor, complaining of the unfairness of not allowing him to empty rubbish at the old quarry, while others were allowed the privilege, and stating that depositing it at the manure depot formed a far greater nuisance.

The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

A discussion took place as to the delay in opening up Glasgow Street at the new railway bridge and it was agreed to write to the contractor asking him to open up one-half of the street at once, and the other half within ten days.

It was agreed to send samples of milk entering the burgh for analysis.

The Chairman explained that it would be necessary to obtain a supply of road metal for the burgh, and suggested that they make arrangements for engaging some of the unemployed in breaking it up.

The matter was remitted to the Works Committee, as was also a proposal to erect a number of seats in the neighbourhood of South Beach.

The meeting then sat as the Local Authority, when a very satisfactory report from the medical officer was read showing that the death rate during the quarter was only 15 per 1000, and there was a total absence of epidemic disease.

ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

A special meeting of this Board was held yesterday afternoon – Mr Kirkhope presiding.

The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to consider the plans and specifications in connection with the removal of a partition in Ardrossan No. 2 School (Mr Comrie’s).

The Clerk then read a letter from Mr Armour, architect, which stated that the work could be done for from £22 to £25, though it was stated that he did not favour the sliding partition system.

Rev. Mr Scott moved that the partition be not interfered with in the meantime. The Rev. Mr Cross seconded the motion.

After an acrimonious discussion, the chairman moved that the partition be taken down and that no other partition be put up. The Rev. Mr McGilchrist seconded the Chairman’s motion.

The respective motions were then supported by their movers and seconders, and these being all the members who were present, the casting vote of the Chairman decided the matter in favour of his own motion.

Rev. Messrs Scott and Cross recorded their dissent.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The monthly meeting of Police Commissioners was held on Monday night – Provost Hogarth presiding.

The ordinary account showed a credit balance of £16 5s 6½d, the general sewer rate account a debit balance of £2 2s 11d, and the Local Authority account a debit balance of £11 2s 7d.

A motion that they approach the Gas and Water Company with a view of purchasing the water works by arbitration was lost in favour of an amendment that no steps be taken in the matter.
