ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of this board took place on Thursday evening – Alexander Ingram, Esquire, chairman of the board, presiding.

For the most part, the business of the evening was of a somewhat routine character.

In passing the accounts, a conversation arose when one for the burial of a man who had recently died very suddenly in a house at Harbour Buildings, Ardrossan, was being scrutinised. One of the members intimated that he had, on information of his illness, personally called and seen the person, and the sudden result of the case had caused him much concern, as when he first visited the poor fellow he appeared only to be suffering from a slight pain in the head; but on the following day, when he saw him, his sufferings had alarmingly changed, and he died that afternoon.

He had been told that the dying man had had no medical assistance; but to this the inspector replied that he could testify that one, at least, of the medical officers of the board had attended the patient and prescribed for him.

Several members expressed the opinion that, were the medical officers present at their monthly meetings, such a question as this could be speedily and satisfactorily put right.

The Chairman thereupon moved, and it was agreed, that the inspector be instructed to communicate to all the medical officers in the district that it was their duty to attend the monthly meetings of the board while they were officers of the board.

The inspector having read the minutes of the last meeting with reference to the motion made to petition Parliament against the proposed “Bill to amend the Act for the valuation of land and the levying of assessment in Scotland,” the Chairman intimated that he had drawn up the necessary petition and forwarded it to Mr Finnie, M.P., along with a letter to that gentleman, copies of which he read to the meeting.

Mr Finnie very promptly and very cordially returned the answer acknowledging receipt of the petition and letter. In this letter, which the Chairman also read, Mr Finnie said: “I may mention that the matter will be referred to a Select Committee, of which, I believe, I am to be a member.”

The board approved of what had been done, and, on the motion of Mr Fullerton, awarded a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman for his conduct in the matter.

ARDROSSAN TOWN COUNCIL

On Monday evening the monthly meeting was held. Provost Barr occupied the chair.

The clerk was instructed to send in a claim for £15 to Messrs Wallace & Crawford, for services rendered by the fire brigade at the recent fire on the premises of these gentlemen.

A report from the medical officer was read to the meeting, from which it appeared that since his appointment in October last there had been no epidemic nor infectious disease in the burgh, and that the sanitary condition of the town was excellent.
