ARDROSSAN U.F. PRESBYTERY AND WAR SAVINGS

At a meeting of Ardrossan United Free Presbytery in St. John’s Hall, Ardrossan, yesterday, the Rev. W. D. M. Sutherland, Landsborough Church, Saltcoats, was appointed moderator.

A recommendation by a committee was moved by the Rev. J. Adamson, seconded by the Rev. W. Watson, that the Presbytery strongly recommend that War Savings Associations be formed in connection with every congregation and that ministers should bring the matter prominently to the attention of their congregations.

The Rev. Campbell Stephen, in moving an amendment that the Presbytery, without making any recommendation, invite sessions to take consideration of the matter, said that many people were finding it difficult enough to make a living at the present time, and he questioned the policy of the Presbytery making any such recommendation.

If the Presbytery recommended him to bring the matter before his congregation he would do so, but, personally, he would do nothing to assist in the prosecution of the war. As a Christian man he felt he should not do so. That was his interpretation, but he was quite willing that other individuals should interpret the matter in their own way.

Mr William Kerr said he was sorry to hear such an expression from one of their ministers. Wages at present were quite ample to allow of individuals lending their share financially to help finish the war, and it was the plain duty of everyone to help.

The recommendation was adopted, the Rev. Campbell Stephen entering his dissent.

Reports bore that for the first nine months of the year the contributions to the Foreign Mission within the Presbytery showed an increase of £40 5s 5d, to the Women’s Foreign Mission Fund an increase of £32 1s 7d, and to the Central Fund an increase of £71 14s 7d.
