ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

Rev. J. D. McCall presiding.

A communication was read from the secretary to the Saltcoats Temperance Union asking the Board to sanction the introduction of a temperance reading book in the schools.

Mr. Kirkhope moved that the secretary of the Union be asked to send a specimen of the class book, to be considered by the Board at next meeting.

Mr. Morris seconded.

Mr. Shearer objected to a change in the class books, on the ground that it meant more expense to the ratepayer who had several children at school. He moved that the matter be left over till the Board came to consider the general question of making a change in the class books.

Rev. Mr. Halden seconded.

After some discussion Mr. Shearer withdrew his motion, and Mr. Kirkhope’s motion became the finding of the meeting.

SANITARY PROSECUTIONS

At the instance of Mr. Charles J. Shaw, burgh surveyor, several householders, shopkeepers, &c., in Princes Street, Ardrossan, were charged at the Burgh Court yesterday with having failed to keep a common close clean. Some ashes had been allowed to gather round the receptacle provided by the Commissioners under the daily collection of ashes system, and straw had been allowed to accumulate in places.

Several of the accused cross-questioned the burgh surveyor very closely, particularly about the absence of one of their number, who had not been summoned to appear.

Fines of 2s 6d each were imposed.

SMACK ASHORE NEAR ARDROSSAN

About nine o’clock on Monday night the sailing smack MARYS – Greenock, 23 tons register, Captain McMillan, Rothesay, master – bound from Rothesay to Ardrossan for coal, failed to take Ardrossan Harbour in a stiff north-westerly breeze, and being driven to the southwards grounded on the beach.

She was floated off at three o’clock yesterday morning, but the tow-rope parted and the vessel drifted on to the Campbell Rock, where she still lies in imminent danger of breaking up.

The captain and the mate, who were the only men on board, came ashore with the pilot in a small boat.
