Died on service, Private Donald McCOLL, (32), Service No. 11984, 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – born at Tobermory; enlisted at Ardrossan; husband of Alice McColl, Blanche Villa, Alderman’s Hill, Palmer’s Green, London.

Died on service, Private WILLIAM WRIGHT, (23), 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of John Morton and Elizabeth Wright, Parkhouse Farm, Ardrossan.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Intimation has been received by Mr and Mrs J. Wright that their eldest son William A. Wright, signaller and telegraphist, R.S.F., missing since Loos, 25th September, 1915, is now presumed to have been killed on that date or since died.

Previous to joining the R.S.F. he had been with Nobel’s Garrison at Ardeer from the outbreak of the war, and previous to that was employed by the Glasgow & South-Western Railway Company as a signalman.

He was 23 years of age, and is deeply mourned by his sorrowing parents, brothers and sisters.”

SEAMEN NEGLECTING DUTY

At a special J.P. Court at Ardrossan – Provost Barr and Mr A. Mack on the bench – held in the Town Hall on Saturday, CHARLES HUNTER and ARTHUR HANSEN BENSON, two seamen on board the ship ELFRIDA, presently lying in Lamlash Bay, were charged with neglecting duty.

While the evidence proceeded, the prisoners used very disrespectful language to the bench.

They were found guilty, and sentenced each to 12 weeks’ imprisonment, with hard labour.

ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

The Ardrossan Club have not been fortunate in securing a large entry for their St. Leger Stakes, but still it bears in favourable comparison with that decided at Abington, under the auspices of the Scottish National last week, while the entry for the All-Aged stakes is largely in excess.

The preliminary proceedings were carried through at the Eglinton Arms Hotel early in the afternoon, and were succeeded by a dinner, to which about thirty members and their friends sat down, presided over by D. C. Gairdener, vice-president. The proceedings were of a most cheerful character, and anticipations were indulged in a more prosperous career for the club in the future.

At the close of last season a number of hares were put down on the grounds and so well have they bred that there is every prospect of excellent sport being obtained tomorrow. The meet is at Sharphill in the neighbourhood of Saltcoats.

ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

The members of the Ardrossan club mustered in strong force at the George Hotel, Kilmarnock, last night to assist at the draw for their autumn meeting, which will be begun today over the Earl of Eglinton’s estate near Ardrossan.

The St. Leger obtain the capital acceptance of 44 out of an original entry of 60, notwithstanding that a couple of those were void through the death of Mr John Speir, one of the oldest and best members of the club.

For the Ardrossan Castle Stakes 22 put in an appearance, so that if the hares are at all plentiful, there will be two excellent days sport.
