GLASGOW HERALD
25 SEPTEMBER 1879

SEAMAN DROWNED AND NARROW ESCAPE

The brig MARY WILSON, of Ardrossan, encountered the full fury of the gale on Monday night while off the Irish coast. She was bound from Ardrossan to Dublin, and took shelter in Belfast Lough till Monday morning.

On the same night two seamen, named McWhan and McCrae, were seated at the starboard quarter, when both were washed overboard by a heavy sea. Strange to say, McCrae was washed back on deck again, and seizing a rope thereby saved himself; but McWhan was never seen again, and owing to the darkness of the night and the heavy sea nothing could be done to save him. He belonged to Saltcoats, and was 18 years of age.
