ARDROSSAN BURGH RESERVOIRS

CASUALTY OF WAR
11 APRIL 1918

Died on service, Lance Corporal JOHN McDOWALL, South African Infantry – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of the late David McDowall, potato merchant, and Mrs McDowall, ‘Mayfield’, North Crescent, Ardrossan.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Official intimation has been received that Lance Corporal John McDowall, South African Infantry, was killed on 11th April.

Lance Corporal McDowall, who was the third son of the late Mr David McDowall, potato merchant, and of Mrs McDowall, Mayfield, North Crescent, Ardrossan, belonged to and was educated in the town. He served his time as a joiner with Mr Harry Wallace, and was a member of the Ardrossan Volunteers.

At the time of the South African War, he volunteered for service, and joined the Yeomanry at Glasgow. He went through some of the fighting in South Africa, and was wounded and taken prisoner, but was released as the result of a success gained by the 17th Lancers.

He displayed great gallantry in the action in which he was engaged, and he was mentioned in Lord Kitchener’s final dispatch.

He returned to South Africa after the war, and was engaged in connection with the Premier Diamond Mine, Pretoria.

His patriotic spirit again manifested itself by joining the Transvaal Scottish Volunteers, and while a member of this splendid body he took part in the Zulu campaign.

He was also one of those sent to this country to represent South Africa at King George’s Coronation.

When the South African rebellion took place after the start of the present war, he again volunteered for service with the Scottish, and after that revolt had been suppressed, he joined General Botha’s Army and went through the successful campaign in German South West Africa.

Enlisting thereafter in the Overseas Forces, he came over to England for training about a year ago, and had been in France for some time. He was wounded at the Battle of Menin Road, and was again back on service.

Just before the start of the German offensive he came to Ardrossan on leave, but he was recalled by wire on the day of his arrival, and left for the front the following morning.

To his mother and brothers, who suffered another family bereavement only last week, the deepest sympathy is felt.”

ARDROSSAN LICENSING COURT

The Magistrates yesterday sat as a Licensing Court for the first time in the history of the burgh. Previously Ardrossan came under the jurisdiction of the Northern District (Ayrshire) Licensing Court, but as a result of the last census Ardrossan, having a population over 7000, was empowered by a Licensing Order to constitute a Court of its own.

Provost G. McKellar was appointed chairman.

The Court was adjourned for the transaction of other business till next Tuesday.

ALARMING ACCIDENT

Yesterday afternoon, an accident, which might have been attended with serious consequences, occurred at the floating dock of Messrs P. Barclay & Son, Ardrossan.

The dock had been cleared from its usual berth near the quay to permit the launch of a vessel, and when the dinner bell rang there was a rush on the part of the men for places in the boat which was to convey them ashore.

About 90 people got aboard in this way, and as the boat was overloaded it capsized, all of her occupants being thrown into the water.

The scene created great excitement amongst the crowds of people on shore, and prompt measures were taken to rescue the struggling men, one gentleman, Mr Boyd, grocer, boldly plunging into the water and assisting one of the hands ashore.

Nobody suffered much from the accident.

MUNICIPAL ELECTION - ARDROSSAN

Yesterday was the last day for receiving nominations for Police Commissioners for the burgh of Ardrossan; and as the old Act has now been supplanted by the General Police and Improvement Act, 1862, no fewer than nine new members fall to be elected.

The apathy which usually characterises our municipal elections promises in the present case to disappear, as for the nine seats we have 12 aspirants.

They are as follows: -

Provost Barr, Bailies Currie and Hogarth; Treasurer Gilfillan; Councillors Fullerton, Boyd, Craig, McLean, and Young, all of whom were members of the late Council.

The new candidates are as follows: -

Messrs John Boyd, shoemaker, and John Anderson, grocer, both of whom are put forward by the Templar Lodges, and Mr Adam Cowan, draper.
