ARDROSSAN - FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR A. D. BRYCE-DOUGLAS

Yesterday the grave closed over the remains of this well-known engineer. The funeral was private, only the relatives and more intimate friends of the deceased being present.

Before the coffin was placed in the hearse an impressive service was conducted by the Rev. J. D. McCall, of the new Parish Church.

All along the route from Seafield to the cemetery, crowds of townspeople had gathered, and as a mark of esteem the shops in the town were shut between the hours of two and three, and the bell of the Parish Church (of which the deceased was a trustee) was tolled.

A number of beautiful wreaths were laid upon the coffin and afterwards upon the grave.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of this board took place on the evening of Thursday last, in the Town Hall, Saltcoats – Mr. Alexander Ingram presiding.

In reply to the chairman, the Inspector said that he could not say officially that there were paupers belonging to other parishes being buried in the old Ardrossan Churchyard; he believed it was said to be done, but he could not say exactly.

The question elicited a somewhat lengthy conversation amongst the members, in which several contended that it was not a matter for the Parochial Board at all to take into consideration, but more properly for the Sanitary Committee; while others held that it was a question which the Board should take up, as they had, on account of the crowded state of the churchyard in question; and with regard for the public health, purchased twenty lairs in the New Cemetery, and they agreed that if there was room to bury the paupers of other parishes in it, there should certainly be a preference secured to those paupers who died belonging to the own parish.

The subject was allowed to drop, no decision being arrived at.

ARDROSSAN – POLICE COMMISSIONERS

A special meeting of this Board was held on Monday night – Bailie Hogarth presiding.

On the motion of the Chairman the Commissioners unanimously resolved to record their acknowledgement of the late Provost Barr’s invaluable service in advancing the best interests of the burgh since its formation, and their high appreciation of the judicious manner in which he had discharged the duties of Chief Magistrate during that period; further, to record their deep sense of the loss the town and community generally have sustained through the Provost’s demise, and their sympathy with his relatives under their bereavement.

The clerk was instructed to send an extract of the resolution to the Provost’s representatives.

On the motion of Commissioner Boyd, shoemaker, Mr. John Anderson, grocer, Harbour Place, was unanimously nominated to the office of commissioner ad interim, and he, having been introduced to the meeting, declared his acceptance of the same.

On the motion of Bailie Gilfillan, Mr. John Hogarth was unanimously elected Provost and Senior Magistrate of the burgh.

On the motion of the Provost, Mr. John Craig, at present burgh treasurer, was unanimously elected junior magistrate of the burgh. Mr. Craig consented to act as treasurer up till the conclusion of the current financial year, when he will be relieved of the duties, it being the intention of the Commissioners to reconsider the position of treasure to the town.

ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

This board met yesterday, under the presidency of Provost Barr.

The Clerk read a letter from Mrs. Marshall, in answer to the communication he had forwarded intimating her dismissal as teacher of Saltcoats School, which stated that the board had not the power to discharge her, and declining to accept the dismissal.

The Clerk also read a communication from Messrs McEwen & Carment, writers, Edinburgh, stating that Mrs. Marshall was advised that the board had no right to remove her. They also intimated that in the event of the board not reinstating Mrs. Marshall, proceedings would be taken.

The Clerk stated that he had written to Messrs McEwen & Carment, informing them that the board had submitted the matter to the Board of Education. He had received a further communication from Messrs McEwen & Carment, which stated that should the board insist upon dismissing Mrs. Marshall they would resist it, and asking the board to give the name of their agent.

After some discussion the Clerk was instructed to reply to Messrs McEwen & Carment, referring them to the board’s written dismissal of Mrs. Marshall.

The Clerk was ordered to forward Mrs. Marshall’s salary, and intimate that the board would not in future recognise her as a teacher, or pay her any salary.
