ARDROSSAN MAN FOUND DROWNED

About mid-day yesterday the body of a young man was found floating in the old dock at Ardrossan, and it was at once taken out and removed to the mortuary.

Later in the day it was identified as that of WILLIAM GIBSON, postman, son of William Gibson, builder, Ardrossan.

The deceased had left his home the previous evening and did not return.

[Family intimations in the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald indicate that William was the son of William and Janet Gibson, 2 Winton Street, Ardrossan.]

ARDROSSAN NEPTUNE (KILWINNING) MASONIC LODGE No. 442

The visitation of Provincial Grand Lodge took place on Saturday – Brother H. R. Wallace, of Cloncaird and Busby, heading the Provincial deputation.

The P.G.M. expressed satisfaction with the state in which the deputation found the affairs of the lodge.

Referring to the recently passed by-law of Grand Lodge regulating the conferring of degrees, he said the privilege with which this by-law interfered, though much abused by landward lodges in which its exercise was not necessary, was one the withdrawing of which was evidently felt to be a hardship among lodges on the Ayrshire seaboard.

He was willing to bring before Grand Lodge any representation made from Ardrossan in a loyal spirit.

The I.P.M. of Lodge Neptune, Ardrossan, in a few remarks, contended that the operation of the new law called for administrative changes in the Province, in so far as the Saltcoats and Ardrossan Lodge, St. John’s R.A., No. 320, should be required to meet in Saltcoats, from which town it came, and which was now lost to Masonry. The grounds on which he rested his contention was that the operation of the new by-law made it impossible for Lodge Neptune, Ardrossan, to confine her energies to seamen, that she must subsequently come into with this Saltcoats Lodge, meeting a few yards distant, and that Ardrossan with two lodges and Saltcoats (exceeding Ardrossan in population) with none, constituted an anomaly requiring the attention of the Provincial Grand Lodge.

The P.G.M. said Provincial Grand Lodge must decline to interfere in a matter which involved the closing of a lodge, and that action must be taken through Grand Lodge.

ARDROSSAN AND DISTRICT TRAMWAY SCHEME

At a meeting of the Northern District Committee of Ayrshire County Council at Kilwinning yesterday, the clerk read a letter from Mr. Shaw, Ayr, stating that the terms of the promoters of the proposed scheme of tramways for Ardrossan and district were such as would not meet with approval.

Several members took exception to the treatment meted out to the Tramway Committee by the Road Board.

Major Hay said he had had great hopes that matters were in a way for settlement. Unfortunately when the Board met at Ayr on Saturday there were certain conditions put before them by the promoters which they could not accept. At great trouble the surveyor went into the cost for road restoration, wayleave, and reconstruction of footpaths, which came to something like £6700, and for which the promoters offered £2000. Of course it was impossible to agree to these terms.

He was very sorry to think their efforts to try to get this matter settled had failed, and he regretted extremely the failure of the tramway scheme.

Mr. Adams, West Kilbride; Mr. Scott, Largs; and Bailie Christie, Ardrossan, referred to the slighting of the Tramway Committee by the Road Board, the latter gentleman moving a vote of censure on this body.

Mr. Lundholm, Stevenston, remarked that if the Road Board had had any experience they might have given it without taking it out of their hands. He felt considerably on this question, and he had the feeling that they had been snuffed out.

The Chairman pointed out that the Road Board were trustees of the roads for the people, but Mr. Adams refused to admit their priority, and asked that counsel be heard on the question.

Eventually a motion was unanimously passed expressing the meeting’s dissatisfaction at the Road Board’s actions, and requesting that the Tramway Committee be consulted in any further deliberations.
