PARISH OF ARDROSSAN WATER SUPPLY

A special meeting of the Local Authority of the parish of Ardrossan was held in Saltcoats Town Hall on Thursday night, to consider the report of the Committee on Water Supply – Mr James Fullerton presiding.

The report deals with the scheme of supply proposed by the late Mr Moffat, C.E., by which the Ardrossan Burgh Local Authority and the Parish Local Authority were to become joint owners of the Ardrossan Waterworks, and extend them so as to supply both towns.

After several conferences the Burgh Local Authority decided to acquire the works as sole proprietors and extend them with a view to supply Saltcoats on certain conditions; but the committee in Saltcoats had not felt warranted in discussing this new plan.

Conferences were afterwards held, but the negotiations were broken off by the Ardrossan Burgh Local Authority intimating that, having observed that Saltcoats was in treaty with Irvine for a supply, they did not see the usefulness of further communications regarding a supply from Ardrossan.

The Local Authority of Irvine offered to supply water by meter, provided they had the water to spare. They were not prepared to state what the terms for a supply would be, nor was it likely that they could take Saltcoats into partnership.

The Chairman explained the various steps taken by the committee to show the position in which the Local Authority stood with reference to the water question.

He proposed the following motion: -

“That the Local Authority of the parish of Ardrossan of new adopt, jointly with the Local Authority of the parish of Stevenston, the Glen scheme of water supply, as recommended by Mr Gale, C.E., as a joint water supply for the districts of the respective Local Authorities.”

Mr Campbell, Raise Street, seconded.

Dr. Brown moved an amendment that before proceeding to adopt the Glen scheme the whole information obtained on the question of water supply be laid before Mr Leslie, Edinburgh, in order that he may report what would be best for the Local Authority to do in the circumstances.

The amendment was not seconded.

The motion was then declared carried.

Water managers were appointed to act with those from Stevenston Local Authority, and the question of water supply was remitted to the Sanitary Committee, with full powers of the Board.

BOWLING

Ardrossan v. Saltcoats:
On Monday night these clubs played on the Ardrossan green, the game consisting of 25 ends – 3 rinks a side – and was keenly contested. Play commenced at half-past six and terminated about ten o’clock, the concluding heads being played in semi-darkness.

The following was the result: -

Ardrossan, 90; Saltcoats, 60.

Ardrossan Bowling Tournament:
Yesterday the members of the Ardrossan Club were engaged in a single-handed tournament for a handsome piece of plate given by the President of the Club, Mr Kirkhope; and a second prize given by Mr Russel of Kirklands, West Kilbride.

A considerable deal of interest was manifested in the play, which commenced about eleven o’clock, sixteen players having put in an appearance.

In the third ties, the players were Messrs Craig v. Hogarth; and McLoughlin v. Stewart.

RECOVERY OF A STOLEN BOAT

The punt of the sloop MARJORY, of Ardrossan, which was stolen last week from Corrie, Arran, by two young boys wo had been benighted on the island, has been recovered at Scalpsie Bay on the south shore of Bute.

The frail craft in which the adventurous youths made their passage from shore to shore during the prevalence of a heavy gale was somewhat damaged when recovered, and the three oars with which she was equipped are gone.

No clue has yet been obtained as to the identity of the boys.

MERCHANTS’ HOLIDAY

Yesterday was observed in Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston as the annual merchants’ holiday.

The steamer LADY MARY made a trip from Ardrossan to Rothesay, Dunoon, and Lochgoilhead; and though starting two hours behind her advertised time, she carried a good complement of passengers.

THEFT

At a pleading diet of Kilmarnock Jury Court yesterday, before Sheriff Anderson, JAMES STEWART, belonging to Glasgow, was charged with having, on the 24th June last, stolen a silver watch from the pocket of John Glover, bower, Blackwood, parish of Kilmarnock, at the old Steamboat Quay, Ardrossan. The charge was aggravated by four previous convictions.

Stewart pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
