THE STRIKE OF CLYDE SEAMEN AND FIREMEN

Ardrossan:
Much interest continues to be manifested in the struggle going on in regard to the wages question between the shipmasters and the men on the Clyde and elsewhere.

The delegate from the Union has been busy among the seamen and firemen here, and succeeded in getting the crew of the steamer STRATHESK to stand out for the union scale of wages – 30s.

Captain Gifford granted their request, but strange to say, after doing so the men would not go to sea. He soon engaged another crew.

Messrs Burns’ steamers are sailing with their accustomed regularity, and there is no indication, so far, of any change in that service; and the society agents are working away very quietly and orderly, discountenancing anything in the shape of intimidation.

THE STRIKE OF CLYDE SEAMEN AND FIREMEN

The S.S. GRAMPUS sailed about 1.30 on Sunday morning from Ardrossan to Belfast.

Many people hung about the quay, as it was expected the men would have a meeting on the wages question. This is the only night the two crews have an opportunity of meeting, but so busy were the putting cargo into one boat and taking it out of the other that there was little time, with perhaps little inclination, for a meeting.

Everything is going on as smoothly as before the agitation began. The full staff of men remain on board both vessels.

THE STRIKE OF CLYDE SEAMEN AND FIREMEN

Ardrossan:
The interest manifested in the agitation here has greatly lessened since it was seen that the hands employed on board the Messrs Burns’s Belfast boats meant to hold their posts.

The Miners’ Union had, it is stated, promised support to the extent of £20 per week so long as the strike lasted; and Mr. Robertson, Stirlingshire, besides Mr. J. Keir Hardie, both trade agents, had promised substantial support.

SATURDAY 8th FEBRUARY 1975

ARDROSSAN ACCIES

First team : A disciplined forward display from Jordanhill Eagles laid the foundation of their 15 points to 6 win over Ardrossan Accies at Kilmardinny but poor defence in the backs dropped a number of points. D Kirk kicked two penalties for the Accies.

Colin Gibson returned to the base of Ardrossan Accies in their match against Jordanhill Eagles and has been retained for the match against Kelvinside Accies at Balgray on Saturday.

Second team : Ardrossan Accies 2nd XV 31, Drumpellier 2nd XV 0

Accies were quick to open the scoring when full back J Smith converted a penalty. Accies went further ahead with a fine threequarter movement with Nelson Lee cutting across field to send left winger S Hogarth over for a try which Smith converted.

From a set scrum Jim McMillan supporting Brian Gordon on the inside outpaced the visitors' defence to score an unconverted try.

Accies forwards fed their backs with good ball but good defence by the visitors held the Accies thrusts ; but a half-break by A King near the visitors line sent B Gordon over for a try which Smith converted.

A fly back by the opposition was fielded by N Lee who beat three opponents before passing to J Moses to score behind the posts, Smith converting.

A fine threequarter movement with each back drawing his opponent allowed N Lee to squeeze in at the corner for a try which was again converted by Smith.

A good all round performance from the second Accies in which R Wark played a decisive role in the lineout.

Brian Gordon , Ardrossan Accies stand-off, returned to the game last Saturday playing for the second team against Drumpellier. His leg injury stood up to the test well.

Third team :Ardrossan Accies third fifteen defeated Kelvinside Accies by 28 points to 17. Ardrossan were poor in the set scrums but made amends in the lineouts and loose. Ardrossan scorers were D Kydd ( two tries ), I McMurrin, R Murray and I McSkimming and Harvie Steel converted three.

ACTION FOR DEATH OF A HORSE

In Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday Sheriff Henderson Begg issued an interlocutor in an action by Andrew Hunter Brougham Street, against William Dunlop, Sugarhouse Lane, for value of a horse loaned to defender for removal of furniture to Ardrossan.

His Lordship finds that defender, while receiving two horses for the journey to Ardrossan, actually drove them to Girvan, working them night and day on the return journey, with the result that one died from exhaustion, and the other was unfit for work for a week.

Damaged were assessed at £43 7s, with expenses.
