FATAL DROWNING ACCIDENT AT ARDROSSAN

On Saturday night a drowning accident occurred at Ardrossan Harbour.

About eleven o’clock, persons in the vicinity of the harbour were attracted by loud cries for help proceeding from someone in the water. On reaching the spot a man was seen struggling in the water.

A pilot, named Robertson, at once went to his aid with a grappling hook, but he gradually ceased to struggle, and sank.

Constable Wilson succeeded in recovering the body half an hour afterwards.

Deceased, who was a stranger in the district, was about five feet nine inches in height, had close cropped hair, was clean shaven, and was in labourer’s attire.

The body lies in the mortuary for identification.

This meeting was held in the Town’s Buildings on Monday night.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

The monthly meeting of Commissioners was held on Monday night – Provost Hogarth presiding.

A letter was read from the Lanarkshire & Ayrshire Railway Company expressing their willingness to maintain in good order the drain which passes through their property in Montgomerie Street.

Messrs Leslie & Reid, C.E., Edinburgh, gave in a report of the progress of the work of forming a new water reservoir at Mill Glen. This reservoir is situated nearly a mile above the two reservoirs presently in use. In the course of a month or six weeks the engineer expects to be able to store 20 feet of water in the reservoir to help the storage of the Whitlees reservoir. The built culvert of bye-wash at Whitlees is completed.

NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING - ARDROSSAN

JAMES KAYES, second steward of the steamer NORTH-WESTERN, had a narrow escape from drowning on Thursday night.

About ten o’clock he had taken some lighted coals from the steam crane for the purpose of kindling a fire in the steamer, and on stepping from the quay to the steamer he missed his footing and fell into the water. One of the men on board heard a splash, and raised an alarm.

The chief steward, Mr Jamieson, procured a hook, and speedily rescued Kayes, in a matter of some difficulty owing to the darkness, while the closeness of the steamer to the quay prevented the young man from coming to the surface.

It was found that Kayes was bruised about the head, but his injuries are not considered serious.

He was removed to a friend’s home in Ardrossan, where he is progressing favourably.

ARDROSSAN PENNY SAVINGS BANK

The treasurers of this bank have just published a report of their proceedings during 1880, from which we learn that the year began with 393 accounts, having balances to their credit of £118 4s 1d.

During the year 135 new accounts were opened, and 211 accounts closed. £138 15s 11d was deposited and £143 11s 1d withdrawn, while £1 17s was allowed to depositors as interest.

At the close of the year there were 287 accounts in force, with balances amounting to £115 5s 11d. The transactions for the year were 3357.

At the close of the year the treasurers found they could give interest of 2½ per cent on all even sums of 10s remaining one complete month in the bank. That they were able to do so was solely due to the generous kindness of the Messrs Goodwin, founders, in granting the use of their offices, with fire and light, entirely free of charge, every Saturday evening.
