BOWLING
ARDROSSAN v. WEST KILBRIDE

On Friday night a friendly match – four rinks a-side – was played on the Ardrossan Bowling Club green between the above two teams. The green was in good condition, and the weather was fine.

The following was the result – Ardrossan, 94; West Kilbride, 61.

ARDROSSAN BOWLING CLUB IN BELFAST

It may be stated that the Ardrossan Club were not present at the opening of the public bowling green at Ormonde Park, and did not play the Belfast Club. The Ardrossan players had a match with Belmont Bowling Club at their private green, and gained a victory by 66 to 38.

DISASTER TO AN ARDROSSAN SMACK – ACTION FOR LOSS OF CARGO

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, Sheriff Hall gave judgment in an action at the instance of J. & G. Forrest, builders, Whiting Bay, Arran, against Alexander Wright, shipmaster, Ardrossan, in which the pursers sought to recover the sum of £24, being the value of the cargo of building materials belonging to them which was shipped by them on board the defender’s smack ELIZABETH FYFE at Ardrossan on 21st December last for conveyance to Whiting Bay, and which cargo was so seriously damaged in the course of the voyage in consequence of the alleged unseaworthy state of the ship as to be rendered quite useless.

His Lordships finds that on 10th December, 1897, the pursers chartered the smack ELIZABETH FYFE, then belonging to the defender, to convey a cargo of building materials, which was the property of the pursuers, and which included a quantity of lime shells, from Ardrossan to Whiting Bay, Arran.

The smack was loaded in Ardrossan Harbour on 20th December, 1897, and sailed on the morning of 21st December, manned by two able-bodied seamen – Montgomerie as master, and the witness Greer – and put into Lamlash Bay on the afternoon of the same day. Though she encountered no severe weather, she leaked badly during the voyage, so as to necessitate the constant use of the pump; and on 22nd December she was taken to Lamlash Pier, where Montgomerie and Greer, overhauled her, and endeavoured to stop the leaks, but, as the event proved, without success.

On 23rd December she resumed her voyage, but it soon became apparent that she was settling down, and Montgomerie and Greer, who had then obtained the assistance of the witness Kirk, were forced to run her back to the pier. The night being dark, she took the ground a little to the north of it, and remained fast; and the cargo was in consequence so damaged by the influx of sea water as to be rendered for the most part entirely valueless. The pursuers took delivery of a portion of it which was less seriously damaged.

The Sheriff finds in fact and in law that the smack was unseaworthy when she left Ardrossan, and that the defender is liable in reparation to the pursuers for the damage thereby occasioned to the cargo, which he assesses at the sum of £20, with expenses.
