ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The half-yearly meeting of this board was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on Thursday evening – Mr James Fullerton presiding.

On the motion of Mr Guthrie, seconded by Captain Young, Mr Fullerton was re-elected chairman; and in thanking the members for the honour conferred upon him, said that during the last three years pauperism in the parish had decreased from 1 in 17 to 1 in 26 or 28.

There had been no litigation during these three years, either with paupers or with other parties, and the poor-rate had been reduced one-fourth in amount.

They had erected a hospital, in every way suitable, which was entirely free of debt.

The chairman then moved that the ratepayers be assessed in the sum of £1600 for the ensuing twelve months. This amount was the same as last year, and one-fourth less than during the previous three years.

The net receipts last year were £1050 for school board purposes.

A number of reports were then read, including those of the Cemetery, the Hospital Committee, and the Committee under the Mental Health Act, all of which were adopted.

Messrs Ingram and Craig were re-appointed auditors, and this finished the business.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The half-yearly meeting was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on Thursday – Mr Alexander Ingram presiding.

The Chairman stated it was calculated that the Board would require to assess for the ensuing year so as to realise the great sum of £1900.

He proposed that the rate should be the same as last year, 8d per £1 on minerals, and at the rates of 4d, 8d, and 1s on the other three classes, and moved accordingly.

Mr Alpine seconded the motion.

Mr Kirkhope proposed as an amendment that the rates be 11½d, 7½d, and 3¼d, which, with the £150 over last year, would leave a margin of £50, which was, he thought, a sufficient margin.

Dr. Brown seconded the amendment.

On being put to the meeting, only three voted for the amendment, and, as the show of hands for the motion was largely in the majority, the latter was declared carried.

The other minor assessments were also imposed.

Mr James Campbell was re-appointed collector.

Mr Ingram was unanimously re-appointed chairman for another year.

ST. ANDREW’S MEMORIAL PARSONAGE BAZAAR

This bazaar at Ardrossan continued yesterday, and secured a large attendance at the opening ceremony.

The opening ceremony was performed by Mr J. C. Cunninghame, of Craigends, who explained the object of the bazaar, and said he was sorry to see so many articles left over from the previous day; but he hoped buyers would come forward today and buy more readily. He then declared the bazaar open, and a considerable amount of business was done after the opening.

The quadrille band of Mr Adams, Glasgow, again supplied the music.

The drawings for the first day amounted to over £480, and as the bazaar remains open again today (Saturday), it is expected that this sum will be largely augmented.
