29 APRIL 1870
TRIAL SHIP
The new S.S. GLENGARNOCK was officially tried on Tuesday last by a run from Ardrossan to Brodick and back.
The vessel is of handsome model, and is owned by Messrs Merry & Cuninghame, and will be employed in the home iron trade. She was built by Messrs John Fullerton & Company, Paisley.
The day’s steaming showed a result of 10½ knots per hour, which was considered highly satisfactory.

THE STRANDING OF THE STEAMER AYRSHIRE
Yesterday a Board of Trade inquiry as to the circumstances attending the stranding of the S.S. AYRSHIRE at Ballyquintin Point, County Down, on the 9th April current, was held in the Debts Recovery Court, Wilson Street, Glasgow, before Sheriff Erskine Murray.
Mr Thomas Kirkhope, solicitor, Ardrossan, appeared for the captain and owners.
The vessel was owned by the Steamship Ayrshire Company Limited, the managing owner being Mr John Smith, Ardrossan, and the master Thomas Orwin, who resides in Sunderland.

THE KILBIRNIE TRAGEDY
At a pleading diet of the High Court of Justiciary at Ayr yesterday, JOSEPH CALABRESE, an Italian, was charged with having on 13th or 14th April, in a house in Montgomeriston Street, Kilbirnie, occupied by him, assaulted his wife and his children, Minnie, Thomas, John, and Lucinda, struck each of them with an axe or other weapon, and murdered them.
Accused, having had the charge explained to him by an interpreter, pleaded not guilty, and his agent, Mr William Hastings, solicitor, Ardrossan, entered a special plea that at the time of the crime was said to have been committed he was of unsound mind.
The trial was adjourned till the second diet, at Glasgow, on 9th May.

SHIPPING CASUALTIES
New York, April 18:
The G. W. JONES, barque, from Ardrossan, reports that on March 5, in latitude 48, longitude 25, experienced a violent gale from W.S.W. lasting 24 hours, during which she shipped a heavy sea, which washed boats, quarter boats, stove after hatches, and carried away poop rails and waterways.
The QUEEN VICTORIA, from Ardrossan, for this port, has put into Bermuda with rudder gone.

MATE DROWNED
Yesterday morning, DANIEL McPEAK, mate of the schooner, LAURA, of Stranraer, was drowned while the vessel was on her way to Ardrossan harbour.
McPeak had been engaged putting some fittings into the small boat, which was hanging from the stern davits, when one of these blocks suddenly twisted, and caused him to be thrown into the water. Before any assistance could be rendered the unfortunate man had sunk. He was 21 years, unmarried, and belonged to Donaghadee, Ireland.
