THE JESSIE STEWART

The wooden schooner JESSIE STEWART, built by Joseph Russell, Ardrossan, for Blackburn & Company, Fleetwood, and launched on the 5th of March 1862, foundered near Milford Haven, while on a voyage from Newport to Wexford with a cargo of coal.

TRAINS, BUSES ARE STUCK IN SNOW

Ayrshire:
Snowdrifts on the line near Ardrossan held up early trains. Among the stranded passengers were 50 pupils of Ardrossan Academy.

In Saltcoats there were drifts several feet deep. Workmen used a mechanical shovel to clear the main streets.

The CHASE, of Fowey, (Pollard, master), from Rochester for Ardrossan, with cement, put into Newhaven on Sunday, making water, after stranding in Dungeness Bay on Wednesday night.

ARDROSSAN DOCK

Work has commenced for the season in earnest. The sluices of the coffer dam have been closed in order to get 6 feet or 8 feet of water cleared out before excavation is gone on with.

A number of men are engaged, and when the water is out a large number more will be put on the work, which is to be proceeded with rapidly.

BODY FOUND

Yesterday, the body of a man in an advanced state of decomposition was washed ashore at Burnfoot, Ardrossan.

The only articles of clothing on deceased were checked tweed trousers, oilskin trousers, blucher boots, and stockings.

The body was removed to the dead-house at the hospital.

A seaman named HUGH BUCHANAN, of the steamer AFTON, went amissing on 21st ultimo, and his friends have been communicated with with a view to the identification of the remains.

HENDERSON: At North Crescent, Ardrossan, on the 20th instant, Matthew Henderson, late of Mill Farm.

DEATH OF WELL KNOWN AYRSHIRE FARMER

Early yesterday morning Mr Matthew Henderson, for many years tenant of Mill Farm, Ardrossan, died at his residence, North Crescent, Ardrossan.

Mr Henderson began life in the grocery trade, carrying on a prosperous business for many years in Princes Street.

All his life he took a keen interest in agricultural affairs, and about thirty years ago he became the tenant of Mill Farm.

In November last he retired from active work.

He was well known in agricultural circles, and at all the more important agricultural meetings in the county his was a familiar figure.

He died between 70 and 80 years of age.

SALE OF WORK

Ardrossan Women’s Liberal Association held a sale of work in aid of the Red Cross Society’s funds.

The sale was opened by Miss Russell of Seafield, and the sum realised was £11 18s.
