GLASGOW HERALD
30 JULY 1890

DEATH

STEEL: At Winton Cottage, Saltcoats, on the 28th instant, in the 72nd year of his age, Captain Archibald Steel, lately harbourmaster, Ardrossan.

DEATH OF CAPTAIN ARCHIBALD STEEL

By friends and acquaintances at a distance, as well as by his townsmen and the employees of Ardrossan harbour, the intimation of the death of Captain Steel, late harbourmaster, will be received with regret. By all he was much esteemed, and the tone of his moral and religious character was high. He was a lifelong supporter of the temperance cause, and one of the managers of the independent Church, Ardrossan, in connection with the fostering and building up of which much of his time and means were spent. He was one of the many successful sea captains that hailed from the neighbouring town of Saltcoats; and because of his kindly disposition, his generous and unselfish nature and sprightness of character, his memory will be long revered by all who knew him.

The flags on the ships in the harbour of Ardrossan were flown at half-mast high as a tribute of respect to his memory.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

NEW FOUNTAIN

Ardrossan has just received a very useful gift in the shape of a fountain, which has been provided my Miss Houston, in memory of her brother, the late Dr. Houston, who was much esteemed as a medical practitioner here.

The fountain stands about eight feet high, possesses a couple of basins, and is ornamented with a very chaste lamp. It is built of Creetown and Hull granite, and from the basins there is an abundant flow of water, from 80 to 100 gallons passing through the pipes daily. It will form a useful ornament to the town, and will be a great boon to the inhabitants and visitors.

Mr Mossman, Glasgow, is the sculptor, and he has accomplished the work with skill and taste.

ACCIDENT TO THE ARRAN STEAMER

Yesterday morning while the steamer BRODICK CASTLE was on her way to Arran from Ardrossan, and within three miles of Brodick, two of the starboard paddle floats got broke, and coming into contact with the paddle box smashed a considerable portion of it.

Fortunately no one was hurt, and in about an hour the damage was sufficiently repaired to allow of the steamer proceeding at half speed.

On arriving at Brodick Captain Buchanan promptly arranged with the captain of the GLEN ROSA to take on the passengers for Whiting Bay, which he courteously did, bringing those also leaving Whiting Bay to Lamlash on her return trip, where they were transferred to the disabled steamer.

By these prompt measures, notwithstanding the large quantity of luggage, the only inconvenience resulting was a delay of the homecoming passengers for about three-quarters of an hour in leaving Ardrossan.
