POTATO CROP

The potato crop on the above lands of Ardrossan and West Kilbride is much later this season than formerly.

In the Ardrossan and Kilbride districts the early crop has been to a great extent destroyed by the frost, and the late crop is not yet ready.

Died on service, Farrier Sergeant NEIL GILLIES McGREGOR, (23), Royal Horse Artillery – Theatre of war – France and Flanders - born at Ardrossan; son of Mary McGregor and the late Colin McGregor, 2 Hope Street, Greenock.

CASUALTY OF WAR
17 JULY 1917

Died at sea, Stoker GEORGE RAMSAY, (36), HMS NEWMARKET, son of John and Rebecca Ramsay; husband of Grace Marshall McMillan or Ramsay, 22 Harbour Place, Ardrossan, and father of five.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats subsequently reported: -

“Stoker George Ramsay, who has been lost at see through the torpedoing of his vessel, was the son of Mrs Ramsay, Harbour Place, Ardrossan, and his widow, Mrs Ramsay, and family of five, also reside in that street.

As a youth he went to sea, but later he was employed with W. Christie & Company.

When the war broke out, he joined the Navy, and had been away for two years and nine months without being home.”

[HMS NEWMARKET was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UC-38, south of Ikaria Island in the Aegean Sea.]

STEAMER ASHORE AT ARRAN

A fine new screw steamer, named the RENFREWSHIRE, which had come down the river from Glasgow on a trial trip, went ashore during clear and calm weather at Brodick, Arran, on the afternoon of Friday past. A large party of ladies and gentlemen were on board at the time.

The vessel, we believe, sustained considerable damage, several large holes having been made in her bow by the force of the concussion, and her fore compartment is full of water.

Many of the passengers and the members of the band crossed to Ardrossan on Saturday morning per the LADY MARY; and early on the same morning workmen from the shipyard of Messrs Barr & Shearer, proceeded in a tug steamer to Brodick to render necessary assistance in getting the steamer off.

TWO GLASGOW HOLIDAYMAKERS DROWN

Two Glasgow holidaymakers lost their lives in a boating accident at Ardrossan today. They were David Harkins, (25), and James McGuinness, (23).

The men were out rowing when their boat apparently struck a submerged rock about 50 yards from the shore. The boat tilted over and Harkins and McGuinness were thrown into the water.

The two men had hired the boat at Saltcoats.

According to intelligence received at Ardrossan yesterday morning, the steamer RENFREWSHIRE still remains firmly fixed on the rocks at Brodick.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

The annual meeting of electors of this parish for the purpose of choosing seven representatives to serve in the Parochial Board for this current year was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, last week. There was but a thin attendance – Mr Greenwood, inspector, in the chair.

The following gentlemen were elected: -

Rev. A Cross; Archibald Caldwell, weaving agent; James Baillie, clothier, Green Street; James W. Fulton, shoemaker; John Brownlie, grocer; Robert Lockhart, farmer; and William Hogarth, farmer.

This was all the business done.

BAZAAR AT ARDROSSAN

The bazaar at Ardrossan on behalf of Glengarnock U.P. Church was opened yesterday by Mr J. L. Bailey, banker.

Notwithstanding the showery nature of the weather, there was a fair attendance.

The quadrille band of Mr Law, Kilbirnie, was present during the day, and enlivened the proceedings with excellent music.

BAZAAR AT ARDROSSAN

The bazaar in connection with the West Kilbride Manse Fund closed on Saturday evening – the total amount drawn being £326 12s 2d. The bazaar has therefore more than realised the expectations of the promoters.

It was well attended during the day, and especially in the evening; and it may be noted that over £100 worth of goods remained unsold.

At the close the Rev. Mr Balderston announced the result of the enterprise amid much cheering, and thanked all those who had assisted in bringing about this satisfactory result.

Looks like Ardrossan was popular for bazaars probably the wide streets and passing trade were the attractions.

And doubtless timed to capture the custom of the Glasgow Fair holidaymakers.
