ARDROSSAN AND WEST KILBRIDE FARMERS’ SOCIETY

The annual show under the auspices of the Ardrossan and West Kilbride Farmers’ Society took place at Ardrossan on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. Entries were somewhat more numerous than last year’s.

Ayrshire cattle were a particularly good show, and there was a decided increase in the horse section, although here the quality was not remarkable.

CASUALTY OF WAR
10 MAY 1917

Died on Service, Bombardier GILBERT DOUGLAS, (29), 4th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Peter and Catherine Douglas, 87 Princes Street, Ardrossan.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Official notification has been received by Mr and Mrs Peter Douglas, 87 Princes Street, Ardrossan, that their son, Bombardier Gilbert Douglas, Canadian Field Artillery, died of wounds on 10 May at a casualty clearing station.

Bombardier Douglas was 29 years of age and a native of Ardrossan. He was educated at Eglinton Public School and Academy, and was later employed at the building trade in Saltcoats.

About ten years ago he went out to Canada, and followed his trade there, and shortly after the outbreak of war he joined the Canadian Army. He went to the front with the Second Contingent, and has been there for the last two years, coming through many hard fights unscathed.

He had many friends in his native town, and Mr and Mrs Douglas and family, will be deeply sympathised with in their loss.

One of their remaining sons is at sea, and the other is in the Army, and is at present on the Salonica front.”

PROPOSED AYRSHIRE TRAMWAY SCHEME

At a meeting of the Northern District Committee of Ayrshire at Kilwinning yesterday – Mr W. D. Russell, Maulside, presiding – a communication from agents in Edinburgh was laid before the meeting with reference to the inauguration of a tramway system between Ardrossan and Stevenston.

It pointed out that the scheme had now taken a definite shape, and it was the intention of the promoters to apply for a Provisional Order in November next.

A meeting was therefore suggested with the view of coming to an agreement with the Council as to the route within its jurisdiction.

A plan was also submitted to the meeting pointing out the suggested route, and Mr Williamson, the clerk, explained that it started at a point between Ardrossan and West Kilbride, and continued through Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston, terminating near the Glasgow & South-Western Railway bridge.

A committee consisting of Messrs Adams, Lundholm, Christie, and Aitken, was appointed to endeavour to arrange matters satisfactorily and report.

BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY AT ARDROSSAN

The Board of Trade inquiry into the stranding of the steamer ISMYR on the County Down coast was resumed at Ardrossan yesterday.

The Court find the master, WILLIAM CLARK, in default, and therefore suspend his certificate for three months from this date.

At the close Mr Mack, one of the presiding justices, complimented the master for the straightforward and manly way in which he answered all the questions put to him, which had a great weight with the Court in coming to their decision.

Every facility would be given to the master to enable him to recover his certificate as soon as the three months had elapsed.

The remainder of the crew were exempted from all blame.
