ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

Due to the kindness of His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch the members of Ardrossan Coursing Club enjoyed a capital day’s sport yesterday over the farm of Barr, near Sanquhar.

THE EGLINTON CHAMPION COLLAR

The dogs left in the collar are all pretty well together, and it will depend upon the hares tomorrow which wins, but AFTON is going fully as well as anything, and I shall expect to see him pull through, while COUNTRY GIRL is likely to win the consolation.

ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

The long-continued frost has fairly upset the arrangements for coursing all over the country, and for the past ten weeks it has been impossible to bring off any meeting in Scotland.

Twice postponed, it was feared the winter meeting of the Ardrossan Coursing Club would have to be abandoned; but thanks to the liberality of Mr J. H. Houldsworth in a third time granting permission to course over his shootings on the Fenwick estate, an effort will be made to bring it off tomorrow and the following day.

There was a capital turn-out of the members at the George Hotel, Kilmarnock, last night, when the entry and draw took place, the large number of 34 being obtained, and that without the slightest effort having been made to secure any extra representation.

The meet is to take place at Bighill Road End, five miles from Kilmarnock at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow morning.

ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

The weather was dead against sport yesterday at Fenwick. A hard frost prevailed in the morning and it was not until one o’clock that an attempt was made to start. Even then the ground was far too hard, and but for the anxiety of the members to have the Collar run off it would certainly have been agreed to postpone until the following day.

There was, however, a great turnout of spectators, all anxious to witness some sport, and the surface of the ground being softened a little by the sun the members decided to make a beginning.

Perhaps it would have been better had they not done so, as the trials obtained were far from satisfactory, and the hares rising wild prevented us getting once over the card, thus putting the dogs at the bottom at a disadvantage with those at the top; most of these, however, have got such severe courses that should the fresh ground that has now set in be of the decided character it promises at present, the owners of the four brace at the bottom left over will have no reason to regret what in ordinary circumstances would be considered their bad luck.

No reliance could possibly be placed on the running today, but those that made the best appearance were FLYWHEEL (last year’s winner of the Collar), SPORRAN, BONNIE SCOTLAND, CARLO, and CAIRNGORM.

Sport will be resumed tomorrow, and an effort will be made to finish the Eglinton Championship Collar.
