CRAWFORD: Drowned accidentally, at Portland Oregon, United States, aged 23 years, David Inglis Crawford, third son of William Crawford, 10 Montgomerie Street, Ardrossan.

THE WRECK OF THE CHUSAN

Four of the survivors from the wreck of this steamer – Mrs Johnson (the captain’s widow), the captain’s son, Miss Elliott, and Mr Humphreys (the purser) – arrived safely at Salem, Massachusetts, on the 30th November.

In the columns of the Salem Gazette they express their gratitude to the people of Ardrossan for all the kindness shown them during their stay in Ardrossan.

ARDROSSAN GRAIN MARKET

This market was well attended on Thursday, and samples were quickly taken up.

There were exposed 127 bolls wheat, 42 quarters oats, 10 bolls beans, and a quantity of barley.

All the wheat was sold from 23s 6d to 23s per boll; 32 quarters oats sold at 21s 6d (36 lbs), and 10 quarters at 21s 9d (39 lbs); and 10 bolls beans sold at 22s 6d. Barley unsold.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Baltimore, December 28 – the TINTO, British barque, from Ardrossan to this port, has gone ashore at Hatteras, and will probably be a total wreck. Crew saved.

PRECENTOR OF ARDROSSAN NEW PARISH CHURCH

The precentorship of this church having some time ago become vacant, through the resignation of Mr John Boyd, the congregation heard five candidates for the vacancy.

A meeting of the male members of the church was held on Monday evening for the purpose of electing one from the number, when Mr William Kerr, Ardrossan, was elected by a majority of 25.

Two local friendly societies, have just closed their business for the year.

The Ardrossan Friendly Society and the Templars’ Friendly Society have accomplished a considerable amount of good.

CURLING AT KILBIRNIE LOCH

A number of rinks played on Kilbirnie Loch yesterday. The most important game was that for Lord Eglinton’s Jug. The ice was in very bad condition owing to a thaw having set in.

The final tie lay between Kilbirnie and Ardrossan, but the day being too far advanced the game was postponed.

ARDROSSAN FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

The Ardrossan Friendly Society closed on Wednesday evening, when the members received a dividend of 4s 6d, this sum being less than they have received for many years.

The society numbers 164 members, and has been enabled during the year to accomplish a great deal of good. Funeral money has been paid on 21 deaths, amounting to £27 17s 10d, while for sick aliment £42 2s 6d has been expended.

The working expenses amounted to £4 19s, which left a balance on hand of £35 15s.

The Friendly Society in connection with the Lifeboat Lodge of Good Templars also closed on Wednesday evening, when the members received a dividend of 12s 9d each.

The membership numbers 60, and during the year only two brethren received sick aliment.

NEW ARDROSSAN PARISH CHURCH SABBATH SCHOOL

The children attending New Ardrossan Parish Church Sabbath School received their annual treat in the church yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of children, several of the parents also being present.

The Rev. J. D. McCall presided, and suitably addressed the children. A number of hymns were sung under the leadership of Mr Kerr, who also sang a couple of pleasing solos.

At the close of the proceeding each of the children received bread and fruit.

ARDROSSAN ARTILLERY VOLUNTEERS

The annual carbine competition among the members of the 4th Ayrshire Artillery Volunteers for the series of prizes presented by the officers and friends came off at the range yesterday forenoon.

The weather was most disagreeable, a high wind blowing right across the range, accompanied by heavy showers of sleet and snow, rendering accurate shooting all but impossible.

On account of the weather only 5 round were fired at 100 yards, and the following were the prize-takers: -
