ARDROSSAN SCHOOL BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday afternoon in the secretary’s office – Provost Barr presiding.

It appeared from the minutes that at a meeting in January the clerk submitted a summons at the instance of CHARLES MARSHALL, late teacher in Saltcoats Public School, for a retiring allowance or present payment of £2500, and the clerk was instructed to take the necessary steps to defend the action.

ARDROSSAN COURSING CLUB

There was such an improvement in the going this morning that it seemed almost a pity that a start had been made with this meeting yesterday. The mild thaw that set in after midday continued during the night and except on the moor lands the galloping was perfectly safe.

Mr James Spiers’s STANLEY MAID, by BONNIE DUNDEE, got the collar and £40.

LODGE NEPTUNE KILWINNING ARDROSSAN No. 442

The anniversary of this lodge was held on the evening of Friday last.

The brethren, numbering about 50, met in the lodge room about seven o’clock, and afterwards marched in procession through the principal streets, headed by the Kilwinning Brass Band. As torches were employed to light them on their way, a considerable crowd witnessed the march.

Arrived at the Eglinton Arms Hotel, the anniversary proceedings commenced. The chair was occupied by the R.W.M., Brother James Robertson, who was supported by Provost Barr, and several of the lodge office-bearers.

In the course of the evening Provost Barr referred to the necessity of providing a better hall for Mother Kilwinning, and expressed his belief that the daughter lodges in the county would heartily co-operate in this good work.

Song and sentiment combined to fill up a very pleasant evening.

SALTCOATS AND ARDROSSAN ST. JOHN’S ROYAL ARCH No. 320

The brethren of this lodge had an assembly in their lodge room on the evening of Friday last, at which upwards of 20 couples were present.

The quadrille band of Mr Wyllie, Kilwinning, supplied the music and dancing was carried on with great spirit till the morning was far advanced. The assembly was one of the most successful the lodge has ever had, and gave great satisfaction to all present.

SIX SAILORS SENT TO PRISON

On the afternoon of Monday last, six seamen, named JOHN McPHAIL, STEPHEN BRADEN, MATTHEW PETTIGROVE, OLIVER WILSON, JAMES JOHNSTONE, and ROBERT JOHNSTONE, were brought before a special Justice of the Peace Court, held in the Town Hall, Ardrossan, charged, under a section of the Merchant Shipping Act, with refusing to duty on board the DUKE OF WELLINGTON.

The vessel had recently proceeded to sea, and returned again on Saturday leaky; and the men averred that she was not seaworthy.

All of them admitted their refusal to discharge duty; and they were sentenced to suffer six months’ imprisonment each, without expenses. The ship’s husband, who was present in court, stated that the men were at liberty to remove their clothes from the ship.

The presiding Justices were Provost Barr and J. G. Halkett, Esquire, banker, Saltcoats.

VESSEL FOR SALE

For sale by private bargain, the barque “ST. MUNGO,” of Glasgow, presently at Ardrossan. Is a strong substantial vessel, metalled, well found, of light draft, and at trifling expense could be sent to sea.

SHIPPING CASUALTY

Bayonne, February 14 – The French brig JEAN DANIEL, from Ardrossan for Bayonne, was wrecked yesterday morning on the rocks called Criquets, close to the fort of Socoa, during dense fog.

Four men drowned; master and one man saved.

New York, February 16 – The MALTA, British barque, from Ardrossan to Delaware Breakwater, has gone aground at Bermuda, and will probably be a total wreck.
