ARDROSSAN ACADEMY

For the sixth successive year Ardrossan Academy won the Senior Latin Trophy when they competed at the Classics Festival at Glasgow University last Saturday.

Despite a record entry of 240 competitors for the festival organised by the Association of Teachers of Classics from schools in central, west and south-west Scotland Ardrossan also retained the Greek Trophy which was only put up for competition last year.

( You can see more about this contest here . )

Last Tuesday twelve fifth year pupils from Ardrossan Academy visited Ayrshire Central Hospital, Irvine, where Mr Deans of the Forensic Laboratory and Mr McCaffrey of the Physiotherapy Department conducted them round the hospital.

Interesting experiments were laid on, and the pupils and Mrs Skelly and Mrs Smale of the Academy chemistry department gained a clearer idea of hospital work.

On the same day 24 members of the school Geography Society visited Glengarnock Steelworks. The party which included Mr Forsyth and Mr Parker was able to follow the production of steel angle girders from the initial stages in the melting shop.

On Thursday third-year girl pupils visited the pre-school playgroup at Ardeer Halls and spent an hour at the centre playing with the children. Mrs McInnes accompanied the girls and it was arranged that another group of girls would visit this week.

Ardrossan Academy has been quick to take advantage of the " Writers in Schools " scheme, a service operated by the Scottish Arts Council with the support of the Scottish Education Department.

It enables teachers in secondary schools to invite contemporary Scottish writers to talk to senior classes , and earlier in the term Ardrossan Academy fifth and sixth forms were visited by Glasgow poet, Edwin Morgan.

Last Thursday Gordon Williams talked to the sixth form about his career as a journalist and novelist. Among his works are " From Scenes like These ", a novel of Scottish life, and " The Siege of Trencher's Farm ", from which the film " Straw Dogs " was made. Mr Williams spoke with candour and humour about the practical difficulties of making a living as a writer and went on to maintain that the novel was a significant and stimulating medium of expressing ideas.
