HEAVY SNOW

Snow fell heavily in Ardrossan early yesterday morning, but not to any great depth. Shortly after daylight snow again fell and continued more or less all day. By seven o’clock last night it had attained a considerable depth and was still falling.

The subject was “A Visit to the Hospice of the Great St. Bernard,” illustrated by the lime-light views.

The subject was ably treated, and the attendance was good.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – ARDROSSAN

Provost Young presided.

The Clerk reminded the meeting that the Commissioners were in communication with the postal authorities in March last with regard to the enlargement of the local post office. Nothing was heard of the matter at the time, but he had received a letter dated 13th December, stating that the Postmaster-General was of the opinion that the space set aside for the public in Ardrossan Post Office was sufficient for requirements, but the lighting and ventilation were not altogether satisfactory, and, further, that an arrangement had been sanctioned some months ago to have the front door and front window enlarged, which alterations were deemed sufficient.

It was intimated that the sum which falls to be paid to the burgh under the Local Taxation (Customs and Excise) Act is £13 14s 2d.

Sir,

AN ARRAN GRIEVANCE

I am given to understand that turnstiles are erected on the pier at Ardrossan Harbour, and a charge of one penny is levied on all passengers to and from Arran, since this year came in, by the harbour authorities.

Can any of your readers inform myself and other holders of return tickets if this is a lawful levy on us?

I consider that the railway company entered into a contract with me when I bought my ticket for 4s, which entitled me to travel back to or from Arran, as the case may be, without further charge now, the said ticket still being available.

I trust that the Arran house-letters will see it to their interest to make some protest, and that they will get support from regular Arran visitors in doing so, both in regard to the impost itself and the delay which will be caused in collecting the same.

I am &c.,

THE DRAINAGE SCHEME

At the monthly meeting of Ardrossan Commissioners held last night – Provost Young presiding – a report by Mr. Copland, C.E., Glasgow, on a drainage scheme that would carry the sewage of the town clear of the shore was read.

It showed a total expenditure of £4500, with an alternative £535 additional.

It was agreed that measures should be taken to bring the report before the ratepayers with a view to ascertaining whether the scheme would have the approval of the public.
