THE MAIL TRAIN ROBBERY

No arrest has yet been made in connection with the robbery from the Caledonian train which carried the Irish mail from Glasgow to Ardrossan on Saturday night.

The authorities still entertain the belief that the value of the articles stolen was comparatively insignificant.

In addition to the parcel containing jewellery which, as already stated was abstracted, the Belfast postal authorities have informed the officials in Glasgow that the wrapper of a parcel has been found without its contents. This parcel, it has been ascertained, contained a blouse.

Some importance is attached to the fact that though the hampers contained a number of registered parcels these were left untouched.

As to the extent of the robbery, further information can now come only from the consigners or consignees of parcels which may have been included in the mail.

The manner in which the robbery was carried out remains a mystery.

DEATH

CRAIG: At 2 South Crescent, Ardrossan, on the 3rd instant, John Craig, general manager and secretary, Ardrossan Harbour.

OBITUARY

Mr John Craig, Secretary and General Manager of Ardrossan Harbour Company, died at his residence in Ardrossan yesterday morning.

Mr Craig was 67 years of age, and was harbour manager for about 20 years. He took a shock three weeks ago, and never recovered from the effects of it.

Mr Craig began life on the railway, and when he was only 23 years old he was appointed stationmaster on the Glasgow & South-Western Railway at Milliken Park. Mr Craig afterwards became stationmaster at Ardrossan, and later was appointed assistant to Mr Moffat, whom he eventually succeeded as harbour manager.

In his dealings with workers at the harbour Mr Craig showed that he possessed tact and prudence in no ordinary degree, and he had the confidence alike of the harbour directorate and the employees.

The funeral will take place on Monday afternoon, and will be public.

THE MAIL TRAIN ROBBERY

No fresh development has taken place in connection with the robbery from the Irish mail train between Glasgow and Ardrossan on Saturday night.

So far the postal authorities have not received any complaint from the public regarding the non-delivery of parcels sent by the mail. Should no such complaints be forthcoming, it may be assumed that the depredations were limited to the two parcels which the Belfast postal officials discovered to be missing.

Meanwhile the postal authorities have placed the matter in the hands of the Caledonian Railway Company, whose detectives, in conjunction with the police, are actively prosecuting inquiries into the robbery.

Up till last night no arrest had been effected.

I wonder if the launch took place at the "New Yard" into open sea?

ARDROSSAN HARBOUR WORKS

When the extended harbour of Ardrossan is open for traffic it will at once commend itself to all connected with shipping, by reason of its perfect equipment no less than by its increased quay space and depth of water.

To begin with, two of our leading railway companies, the Caledonian and the Glasgow & South-Western have facilities to all parts of the harbour, which, with its broad, well-built quays, has ample room for such a network of lines and sidings as will go far to ensure a good railway service at all times.
