THEFT BY HOUSEBREAKING

At the pleading diet at Kilmarnock Sheriff and Jury Court yesterday, JAMES MURPHY, a chimney sweep residing in Irvine, pleaded guilty to having, on the 30th or 31st ultimo, broken into the premises of Dugald McPherson, spirit dealer, Harbour Street, Saltcoats, and stolen therefrom three wincey shirts.

He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.

SALTCOATS - CYCLE PARADE

On Saturday evening a successful parade took place, which attracted a an immense crowd of spectators.

The object was to aid the fund to provide an instrumental band. The costumes were original and striking, and many of them afforded great amusement. The procession was headed by a band, and visited Stevenston and Ardrossan.

Over £22 were collected for the band fund.

THE MARRIAGE OF PRINCE GEORGE, DUKE OF YORK, AND PRINCESS MARY OF TECK

Saltcoats:
In honour of the event the town and church bells were rung at noon, and flags were displayed from various houses. Shops were open for business as usual.

THE HIGHWWAY ROBBERY NEAR SALTCOATS

The police have been successful in apprehending one of the men who is alleged to have taken part in the robbery of £12 from the person of Mr Livingstone, of Dalry, on Friday last, on the Saltcoats and Dalry Road. His name is GEORGE QUIN, a previously convicted thief.

There is no proof that chloroform was administered to Mr Livingstone, and it would appear that he had been in the company with the two men before leaving Saltcoats.

The police have information regarding the other man which will, it is expected, lead to his speedy capture.

CASUALTY OF WAR
8 JULY 1917

Died on service, Lance Corporal WILLIAM RUSSELL, (21), Service No. 18911, 7th Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Thomas and Jeanie L. Russell, 9 Canal Street, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald previously reported: -

“William Russell, Camerons, son of Thomas and Mrs Russell, 9 Canal Street, Saltcoats, was wounded in action, after having been for fifteen months at the front. He was a worker in Nobel’s before the war.”

DEATH OF MR WILLIAM BRYDEN OF THE MISSION COAST HOME

Yesterday morning, after an illness of several weeks’ duration, Mr William Bryden died at his residence in Quay Street, Saltcoats, in his 68th year.

One of the originators of the Mission Coast Home, and manager of that institution, he was widely known for his skill and success in the treatment of disease.

Under his management the home increased from a small room and kitchen to its present large dimensions, having last year admitted 1381 persons; while income from the same period, given voluntarily, was £1392.

Mr Bryden was highly respected, and in all movements for the benefit of his native town he lent a helping hand. He will be greatly missed, as it will not be easy to fill the blank he has left.

Mr Bryden was a manager of the E.U. Church, and took a warm interest in its affairs.

He is survived by his widow, for whom deep sympathy is felt.

SALTCOATS WEST U.P. CHURCH

On Sunday anniversary services were held in the West U.P. Church, Saltcoats, (Rev. George Fairgrieve’s), which were well attended.

Rev. George Jeffrey, D.D., Glasgow, preached in the forenoon and evening, and Rev. George B. Alexander, M.A., of Jamaica, in the afternoon.

The collections at the various diets of worship, which were on behalf of congregational purposes and debt liquidation, were liberal.
