Died on service, Private JOHN ADAMS, Service No. 39422, 15th Battalion Royal Scots – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – born at Saltcoats; husband of Jeanie Cuthbert Adams, Glasgow.

Died on service, Private WALTER FAIRBAIRN McKECHAN, (22), 7th Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of John and Elizabeth McKechan, 56 Wellpark Road, Saltcoats.

Died on service, Lance Corporal BRYCE McWHILTON LONGMUIR, (18), 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Mr Bryce and Mrs Margaret Longmuir, 107 Argyle Road, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Word has been received by Mr and Mrs Bryce Longmuir, 107 Argyle Road, Saltcoats, that their youngest son, Cadet Bryce McWhilton Longmuir, Royal Irish Rifles, was killed on 29th April.

Cadet Longmuir, who was 18 years of age, had been at an Officers’ Training School in Ireland for eight months, and was undergoing two months’ training at the front before qualifying for his commission.

He was only three weeks at the front when he fell in action. He was wounded in the cheek, and while staying in the trench with an officer pending his removal after dark, a shell killed both of them.

The Chaplain in a letter says: - “All the officers and men who knew him join me in deploring the loss of a most promising soldier, a loyal comrade and a true man.”

Deceased, who was a quiet, likeable young man, was a native of Beith, and was educated at Speir’s School.

Mr and Mrs Longmuir will be deeply sympathised with. Their elder son joined the H.L.I. after the outbreak of war, and took part in the operations on the Gallipoli Peninsula. After three years’ strenuous service he was invalided home, and is still in ill health.”

Died on service, Gunner BEN DEIGNON, (25), Royal Field Artillery, Theatre of war, France and Flanders – late of Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Word has been received that Gunner Ben Deignon, R.F.A., youngest son of Mr John Deignon, late of Saltcoats, and now of 4 Lady Anne Street, Yoker, was killed in action on 29th April.

Gunner Deignon, who was a native of Saltcoats, was 25 years of age. He was educated at St. Mary’s School, Saltcoats, and before enlisting was employed at the Distillery Stores in Glasgow.

He had a large circle of friends in the district, by whom he was well liked.”

TRINITY UNITED FREE CHURCH – SALTCOATS

A congregational meeting was held on Monday evening for the purpose of calling a minister to the vacant charge.

A number of candidates were proposed, and on a vote being taken, Rev. JAMES ADAMS, M.A., St. Andrew’s Square, Greenock, was found to have a majority.

Commissioners were appointed to appear before Ardrossan Presbytery to prosecute the call.

On Thursday the annual distribution of prizes was made in the Common Hall of the College, by Lord Rector, Sheriff Alison, the Principal and Professors, in presence of a numerous meeting of the University, with many Reverend and respectable gentlemen of the city and neighbourhood.

HON. MR ELLIOT AT SALTCOATS

The Hon. H. F. Elliot visited Saltcoats on Saturday, accompanied by Provost Halkett and others, and addressed a meeting of fishermen at the pier, in the course of which he dealt with the question of beam trawling and a close time for herring.

At the close, on the motion of Mr Ronald Hogarth, he received a vote of confidence.
