MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

At the meeting of Commissioners on Monday night – Provost McIsaac presiding – it was resolved to form main sewers in Springvale Street, in the street facing the railway at the back of Caledonia Road, and in the street running from Eglinton Street to Winton Circus, the committee being instructed to obtain offers for the work.

It was agreed that steps should be taken by a committee to ascertain the feeling of the Townhouse Committee as to transferring their rights to the burgh.

Mr Alpine moved that the owners be assessed for rents under £4 instead of occupiers, Bailie Campbell seconded. It was agreed to take the vote on the question at the next meeting.

HOME FOR DESTITUTE CHILDREN

The home for destitute children supported by Ewing Place Church, Glasgow, presented a lively scene on Monday evening, the children (about 40 in number) having assembled in the hall attached to the Home for their fifth New Year’s treat.

The hall was beautifully decorated, and a beautiful Christmas tree, loaded with tempting presents, occupied the centre of the room, while presents of useful articles of dress (valued at £75) sent by Glasgow friends, were hung in conspicuous places. The presents on the Christmas tree, together with a number of books, were distributed to the children by Mrs Stewart (wife of the Rev. George Stewart, Trinity Free Church, Glasgow), and the juveniles seemed to be highly delighted with the operation.

The smart, cheerful, and tidy appearance of the youngsters, who were wont to be gutter children in the city, reflected credit on Mr Fulton, the superintendent, and his able assistant, Miss Smith.

GLASGOW HOMES FOR DISTITUTE CHILDREN

The annual meeting and Christmas tree in connection with the Homes for Destitute Children at Canal Bank and Rockvale, Saltcoats, took place yesterday in the Free Church Hall. There was a large attendance, including local and Glasgow ladies and gentlemen.

The children, numbering about 80, presented a cheerful, tidy appearance.

Mr J. Galloway, of Kilmeny, presided.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

The usual monthly meeting of the Commissioners took place on Monday night – Provost McIsaac presiding.

A sketch of the site of the new Town Hall was submitted. It was agreed to hold a special meeting to consider the same, and in the meantime remitted the sketch to Bailie Miller to confer with the chairman and secretary of the trustees as to a better adjustment of the boundaries and report.,

An intimation was read from the agent of the Glasgow & South Western Railway Company that the company intend to promote a bill to enable them to shut the railway crossing at McLachlan’s Lane, and to open a new road from Kyleshill Bridge to Seaview Road.

The matter was referred to a committee.
