ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Sheriff Hall – JOHN MURRAY, Chapelwell Street, Saltcoats, was charged with having, in the Queen’s Arms public-house, Saltcoats, on the 19th instant, assaulted Edward Blades, miner, Arthur Street, Saltcoats, by striking him a blow with his clenched fist.

He pleaded guilty, and there being a number of previous convictions against him, he was fined in £3, or 30 days’ imprisonment.

These teams met at Saltcoats before a large turnout of spectators. Hurlford had the best of the game all through, scoring one goal in each half. Victoria made a strong defence, and several times nearly scored. Their opponents played a good passing game.

GUTHRIE: At Stanley Bank, Saltcoats, on the 25th instant, Arthur Guthrie, of the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald,” in his 75th year.

DEATH OF AN AYRSHIRE EDITOR

Mr Arthur Guthrie, proprietor and editor of the “Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald,” died at his residence, Stanley Bank, Saltcoats, on Saturday.

Mr. Guthrie was one of the oldest working journalists in Scotland. A native of Kilmarnock, he went to Ardrossan district about 50 years ago, and soon made his mark on the intellectual life of the locality.

He started the “Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald” in the year 1853, and as the years passed he met the necessity for publishing special editions in another three towns in the county. A few years ago Mr. Guthrie assumed as partners his two sons, both of whom remain to carry on the business.

Mr. Guthrie was well known throughout Ayrshire, actively associating himself with political work all his days. He was the oldest Justice of the Peace for the county in the Saltcoats district.

He served on the School Board for a number of years, and represented Ardrossan Burgh on the County Council till the last election, when he voluntarily retired.

His strong literary proclivities found expression in other that editorial work. He was the author of several volumes, of which a biography of Robertson of Irvine, the poet, preacher, is probably best known.

Locally he was especially active in church and philanthropic work.

He died in his 75th year.
