BRUTAL ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday FRANCIS HAGGERTY, marine fireman, Canal Street, Saltcoats, was charged with having on the 28th instant, assaulted Elizabeth McAlister or Brown, wife of Edward Brown, Auchenharvie Pit Cottage, by kicking her on the left side.

He pleaded not guilty.

It appeared from evidence that Haggerty had been lying in the passage of his house, and two girls who wanted through it had asked Edward Brown to assist them. He did so, and Haggerty getting up caught him by the shoulder and run him out, saying that this was his own property, and he could do what he liked.

Mrs. Brown then stepped forward to take her husband away, and Haggerty kicked her on the side. She was knocked to the ground, and was afterwards carried to a stranger’s house, where she had to remain till next day, being unable to walk home.

The Sheriff characterised the assault as “brutal, unmanly, and unprovoked,” and passed sentence of 30 days’ imprisonment.

FLOWER SHOW AT SALTCOATS

The annual exhibition of this society was held yesterday in the Saltcoats Academy. The weather was most unfavourable, rain falling during the greater part of the day, which had the effect of diminishing the attendance.

The show of pot plants and cut flowers was one of the best ever held, notwithstanding the wet season has been very much against cultivators.

The floral ornaments were an attractive feature of the show, the first prize being won by Henry Ward, Stirling.
