THE CALL TO THE REV. GEORGE PHILP, SALTCOATS

A deputation of the Kilmarnock U.P. Presbytery yesterday heard parties in the call from Glengarnock congregation to the Rev. George Philp, of Saltcoats.

Reasons for and against the translation having been given, Mr Philp said he had given the subject his most serious consideration and had felt it his duty not to sever his present connection.

On the motion of Mr Ronald, seconded by Mr Cairns, it was unanimously agreed to continue Mr Philp in his Saltcoats charge.

CASUALTY OF WAR
4 MAY 1916

Died on service, Private ADAM S. BRECKENRIDGE, (34), Canadian Infantry, - Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of the late John Breckenridge, 20 Springvale Street, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“We regret to record the death, from wounds, of Private Adam S. Breckenridge. He was the youngest son of the Late John Breckenridge, 20 Springvale Street, Saltcoats, and was formerly a pupil in Saltcoats Public School.

He emigrated to Canada six years ago, and enlisted in the Canadian Army in December, 1914. He came over with the 50th Battalion in June of last year, and was drafted into the 1st Division, which went to France in August.

He was home on furlough a few weeks ago, and his death at the early age of 34 will be mourned by a large circle of friends, among whom his quiet and congenial disposition made him a general favourite.

Great sympathy is felt for his sisters in their irreparable loss.”

NATIONAL BIBLE SOCIETY – SALTCOATS

The annual meeting of the auxiliary was held in the North Church on Sunday evening. The chair was occupied by Rev. George Fairgrieve.

From the statement read to the meeting it appeared that 74 bibles and one testament had been distributed in Saltcoats, Ardrossan, and Stevenston, and £30 8s 5d forwarded to the society.

Mr Sloan, Glasgow, delivered a very interesting address on the works the society was performing, and made an earnest appeal for increased aid.

Rev. Mr Stewart, Ardrossan, and Mr James L. Bailey, banker, Ardrossan, also addressed the meeting.
