GIRVAN BOY’S BODY FOUND AT SALTCOATS

A precognition was taken by the Justices in the neighbourhood of Saltcoats, by Sheriff Depute and Substitute, on the body of the boy mentioned in a former paper, said to have been found murdered at the east end of the town of Saltcoats; and from the investigation it clearly appears that he belonged to Girvan, and was drowned in the river in the late floods, on the afternoon of Tuesday the 26th ultimo, when attempting to catch a stick that was floating down the river.

The injury on the side of his head must have been received while in the water.

A NOVEL FERRY

During the heavy rains this week, a burn on the road between Ardrossan and Saltcoats got flooded, covering the roadway to a considerable depth, and rendering walking an impossibility, unless it was done on the top of a wall.

Hearing of the difficulty, an enterprising coach proprietor in Saltcoats sent one of his vehicles to the spot, and contrived for some time to do a good trade in ferrying passengers across the water for a penny a head.

THEFT

On Monday, before Sheriff Anderson and a jury, ELIZABETH McDONALD or HAMILTON, an old woman from Saltcoats, was charged with stealing, from a house in Countess Street of Saltcoats, a frock or gown and a handkerchief. She had three times been previously convicted, the last time being in May, 1863.

She was found guilty, and sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment in Perth Penitentiary.

BOWLING

The bowling green connected with Saltcoats was closed yesterday afternoon by a friendly game.

The usual dinner took place in the evening within the Saracen’s Head Inn when the successful competitors during the season had the prizes presented to them. These were as follows:-

Medal gained by James Campbell, Raise Street; president’s prize, gained by James Campbell, senior, Raise Street; time-piece gained by James Campbell, senior, Raise Street; and a shawl, presented by Mrs. C. Gibson, Paisley, gained by Mr. Alexander Hamilton, grocer.

THE STRANDING OF THE BRIG CHARLES

The Board of Trade have resolved on instituting an inquiry into the loss of the brig CHARLES, of Troon, at Thurso on the night of the 15th instant.

Instructions have been received at Thurso to detain the crew as witnesses.

With the exception of the captain, all the crew left for their homes last week, all belonging to Troon, Saltcoats, and Ayr.
