SALTCOATS FREE CHURCH

The annual congregational meeting of the Free Church was held on Wednesday – Rev. D. Scott in the chair.

The reports show that the congregation is making good progress numerically and financially. The total funds raised were £440 – being £34 more than the previous year.

Speeches were delivered by the Rev. J. Stewart of Ardrossan, and Messrs Fullerton, Galloway (of Glasgow), and others; and the choir sang some anthems.

CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

On Thursday evening the Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston Choral and Orchestral Society gave their second concert this session, when Handel’s oratorio “The Messiah” was rendered to a large audience in the Town Hall, Saltcoats.

The seats were almost entirely taken up by reserved ticket holders and honorary members.

The chorus and orchestra numbers 170 performers under the leadership of Mr. W. G. Burgoyne, town organist, Ayr, and they played their part skilfully, and were frequently applauded.

The principals were – Miss Maggie Jaques, soprano; Miss Alice Lakin, contralto; Mr. Joseph Hanson, tenor; and Mr. Arthur Barlow, bass.

At the social event after the concert, the President, Mr. J. C. Stewart, and Mr. Burgoyne, congratulated the members on the success of their efforts.

Sir,

HOME FOR DESTITUTE CHILDREN, SALTCOATS

May I, through your kindness, appeal to the citizens of Glasgow on behalf of the children in the two homes at Saltcoats so long supervised by the late Mr. John Galloway.

The directors are, as usual, arranging for sending about 20 of the children to Canada, where comfortable and happy homes are found for them by our representative, Rev. Robert Wallace.

The children will leave Liverpool next week by the S.S. VIRGINIAN.

The total cost of emigrating them will be about £200, and for this sum I venture to make an urgent appeal.

The excellence of the reports periodically sent home, and the fact that many of the children so endear themselves to those in whose charge they are placed as to be adopted by them, are sufficient indications of the value of the work and of the great change which comes into the lives of the children who, in almost all cases, have been rescued from miserable and degrading surroundings.

Subscriptions earmarked for the “Emigration Fund” may be sent either to Mr. Alexander MacKeith, 18 Howard Street, Glasgow, treasurer of the Glasgow Evangelistic Association or to yours &c.

A. B. BIRKMYRE SCOTT,
116 Hope Street,
Glasgow.

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

On Monday evening last two men attempted to force their way into the manse of the Rev. JOHN BRYCE, at Saltcoats, but the Rev. Gentleman, being on the alert, seized a horse pistol, and undauntedly issuing out of doors, attacked the fellows, felled one of them to the ground, and broke the butt-end of it over the arm of the other.

The robbers, on receiving such an unlooked for reception, beat their retreat, leaving the spirited clergyman in undisputed possession of the field.

A number of loose and disorderly characters have been observed in the vicinity of Saltcoats of late, and it is to be feared that other outrages may be attempted.
