ELECTION OF MAGISTRATES – SALTCOATS

At a meeting of Commissioners yesterday Bailie Miller moved and Mr. Alpine seconded, the appointment of Mr. Alexander Guthrie as Provost, and it was agreed to unanimously.

Mr. R. Blakely was appointed Junior Magistrate.

On the motion of Bailie Miller the Roads Committee and Public Health Committee were combined. Mr. Alpine moved the names of five members for this committee, but Captain Torrance took exception to his exclusion from that committee, and objected to one member nominating a whole committee. He thought each member should propose a name. He objected to hole-and-corner meetings in committee.

The Provost said there would be no hole-and-corner meetings while he was in the chair.

Mr. Alpine’s motion was carried.

A heated discussion took place over the appointment of other committees. Captain Torrance and Mr. R. Duncan entered their dissent and stated they would not serve on the committees to which they had been appointed.
