SALTCOATS - DEATH OF MR JOHN THOMSON

One of the eldest and most respected merchants of the town, Mr John Thomson, Shoemaker, died on Saturday night at his residence in Quay Street. He had a life-long connection with Saltcoats, and took a very active interest in all societies and associations connected with the town. He had been an official of the Free Gardeners Society for over half a century, and was an elder in the East (new Trinity) Church, and for a long time the treasurer, as his father had been before him.

It may be said of him that his life was one of self-sacrifice for the good of others, and the intimation of his death caused a general feeling of sorrow in the community. He was 75 years of age.

A few weeks ago he was presented with a testimonial (a purse of sovereigns) by the members of the Gardening Society and a number of old friends and well-wishers.

SUMMER LETTING CONTROL

Saltcoats Town Council considered a report by the burgh surveyor and the housing factor on the methods to control summer letting in burgh houses and recommending that one person be allowed in excess of the permitted numbers for each room for a period not exceeding 16 weeks.

Consideration of the report was continued, and in the meantime the factor will prepare a register of existing houses with the number of occupants in each.

HUSBAND AND WIFE BADLY INJURED
IN ROAD CRASH ON JOURNEY TO SALTCOATS

A bend on the main Dumfries-Carlisle road At Dornoch, Eastriggs, was the scene of an accident last night when a two-ton motor transporter was in collision with a saloon car, went over it, somersaulted, and struck a building.

Two persons in the car were taken by ambulance to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary where it was stated last night that they were seriously injured.

They are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, of 129 Argyle Road, Saltcoats. They were proceeding from Workington to Saltcoats, where they were going to reside with Mrs. Wilson’s widowed mother.

The body of the car was ripped from the chassis, and the whole vehicle became a twisted wreck.

Three men were trapped in the cabin of the lorry and had to be extricated by the villagers who rushed to the aid of the injured. They escaped with cuts.

SALTCOATS HOUSING SCHEME

On the recommendation of the Public Health and Roads Committee, Saltcoats Town Council last night agreed, subject to the approval of the Department of Health for subsidy purposes, to the erection of 72 houses.

These houses form part of the Council’s scheme to relieve overcrowding.

KYLESHILL SCHOOL

The part of Kyleshill School, Saltcoats, which has been reconstructed after the fire three and a half years ago, was officially opened yesterday by Mr. Robert Kennedy, rector of Marr College, Troon.

The reconstruction cost more than £25,000.

ASSAULT AND THEFT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, John Miller, farm servant, Coalheughglen Farm, Dalry, was charged with having, on the 4th instant, on the road between Dalry and Saltcoats, assaulted George Hunter, sculptor, Wellpark Road, Saltcoats, by striking him on the face with his fist, knocking him down and stealing a watch a chain and a small sum of money.

He pled guilty, and was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment, to date from the period of his incarceration.
