Died on Service, Private HENRY JAMES STANLEY, (18), 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles – Theatre of war, France and Flanders - born at Saltcoats.

1 JULY 1916

Second Lieutenant JAMES G. AIRD, 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – son of Mr and Mrs Robert Aird, 7 Winton Circus, Saltcoats.

The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald subsequently reported: -

“Second Lieutenant James G. Aird, Lancashire Fusiliers, as intimated last week, was formerly reported missing and has now been reported killed. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Robert Aird, 7 Winton Circus, Saltcoats. He was 21 years of age.”

CASUALTY OF WAR

Died at sea on S.S. Mariston, Second Mate JAMES SMITH HAMILTON, (55), born at Saltcoats; husband of Catherine MacDonald Anderson or Hamilton, Glenburn, Whiting Bay.

[S.S. Mariston, on a voyage from Almeria to Glasgow, was sunk by German submarine U-45, 82 miles off Fastnet.]

CASES OF THEFT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday, JAMES PARK, shoemaker and salesman in the Maybole Boot and Shoe Warehouse, Church Street and Chapel Street, Saltcoats, was charged with the theft, between 26th May and 14th June, of six pairs of boots.

He pleaded not guilty, but, after evidence had been heard, was convicted and sent to prison for 60 days.

MARY PARK or McMINN, Saltcoats, pleaded guilty to the theft on 26th May, of eight pairs of boots and a pair of slippers from the Maybole Boot and Shoe Warehouse, Saltcoats, and was sent to prison for 30 days.

BAZAAR AT ARDROSSAN

The bazaar on behalf of the proposed institute and hall at Saltcoats was opened on Saturday at noon by the Hon. G. R. Vernon of Auchans. There was a good attendance during the day.

The total drawings up till six o’clock on Saturday evening were £612, a large quantity of valuable goods remaining unsold.

BOWLING - SALTCOATS V. ARDROSSAN

These two clubs, with seven rinks a side met on Saltcoats green on Tuesday evening for a friendly game.

The weather was fine, and a pleasant game of 21 ends resulted as follows: -

Saltcoats, 173; Ardrossan, 139 – majority for Saltcoats, 34 shots.

THE SUNDAY TRAINS

Last night a public meeting was held in Saltcoats Town Hall to protest against the running of Sabbath trains between Kilmarnock and Largs.

Provost McIsaac presided, and there was a large attendance.

Rev. Dr. Scott moved –

“That this meeting regards the running of railway trains between Kilmarnock and Largs on the Lord’s day as a violation of the divine law, injurious to the welfare of the railway employees, and demoralising to the inhabitants of the towns and villages along the railway line.”

Mr John Anderson seconded the motion, which was adopted.

These annual sports took place at Saltcoats and attracted a large number of spectators. The entries were numerous and the events keenly contested.

THE FAIR HOLIDAYS

In Ardrossan and Saltcoats there are large crowds of visitors, both trains and steamers arriving late through overcrowding. Quarters are somewhat difficult to get, and not a few have had to content themselves with sleeping accommodation in the open air.

The excursionists are much better behaved than usual, and their lively appearance in the streets, and on the lovely sea beach bear ample evidence that they are thoroughly enjoying their welcome holidays.

Sunday morning opened dull, with a high wind, and about ten o’clock rain began to fall heavily, and continued with little intermission the entire day, the weather being of the most disagreeable description. Few people were seen out of doors and visitors have had a disagreeable day of it.

SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

This tournament was resumed yesterday. The weather was very fine in the forenoon and afternoon though somewhat cold in the morning.

The green was in good condition, and some fine games were played among those concluding the first tie. Play commenced in the second tie about two o’clock, and a good number of spectators were present in the afternoon.
