SALTCOATS – MUNICIPAL MEETING

The Commissioners meeting was held on Monday night – Provost McIsaac presiding.

Doctor Brown, medical officer, reported that the water supply at two farms was defective.

The clerk was instructed to intimate that unless the water supply was made satisfactory to the medical officer and sanitary inspector on or before 10 July the sale of milk would be stopped.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

This body met on Monday night – Bailie Kinnier presiding.

It was agreed after discussion to accept the gas company’s offer to supply gas by meter at two-thirds the price charged to ordinary consumers.

The Works Committee was instructed to take offers for having in front of all properties for which a pavement has not yet been formed, and for which a pavement has previously been ordered to be laid.

The Finance Committee recommended that the police rate be 7d per £1, which is 1d more than last year, and that the water rate be 1s 3d per £1, which is 1d less than last year.

MUNICIPAL MEETING - SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

It was unanimously agreed that a telegram be sent to Hon. T. Cochrane, M.P., for North Ayrshire, urging him to support the amendment to the Local Government Bill for placing police burghs in the same position as royal burghs without regard to population.

After a lively discussion the Commissioners decided by a majority not to petition in favour of the licensing powers being placed in the hands of magistrates in police burghs.

A communication was read from the Parochial Board asking payment of the price for the hospital with interest from Whitsunday. The negotiations with the burgh of Ardrossan as to the hospital (which has been purchased jointly by the two burghs) are presently at a standstill, but it was agreed to consider the question at a special meeting on Monday next.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

Complaints having been made by the residents of Montgomerie Crescent as to the practice of lifting sand from the seashore, the Commissioners resolved to communicate with Lord Eglinton and Captain Cunninghame with a view to stopping the lifting of sand and gravel at any part of the beach within the burgh.

FORMATION OF AN ESPLANADE - SALTCOATS

At a meeting of Commissioners - Provost Smith presiding – the offer of Mr. William Clarke, Ayr, to construct an esplanade at the west shore, opposite Montgomerie Crescent, for £2217 12s 9d was accepted.

At the same meeting Dr. C. R. McDonald, Ayr, was appointed permanent medical officer of the burgh on a salary of £28

THE WEATHER – SALTCOATS

Yesterday at intervals the sky was cloudy and threatening rain, but the drought still continues. Farms near the shore, where the soil is light, have suffered much from want of rain.

The temperature at 8 a.m. was 53 degrees, and at 5 p.m. 59 degrees; wind, N.W.

SALTCOATS – PROPOSED PURCHASE OF GAS WORKS

At a meeting of Commissioners last night Provost Smith moved that a plebiscite of the ratepayers be taken to ascertain if they were in favour or against the purchase of the gas works from the Gas Light Company.

The motion was defeated and the matter dropped.
