LICENSING COURT – SALTCOATS

Mr. Nisbet, the holder of a wine and beer license for premises in Ardrossan, applied for a spirit license also. Two voted for granting the spirit license, and two against, and the case was continued.

Mr. P. Thomas, who had a wine and beer license for a restaurant in Saltcoats, also applied for a spirit license. In this case the Justices were equally divided, and the application was continued.

All the old licenses in Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston were granted, the only change being that the hotel license of Mr. R. Norris, White Hart, Stevenston, was withdrawn on the ground of insufficient accommodation, and a public- house license granted instead.

One application by a new tenant and one for renewal of transferred certificate were granted.

LICENSING COURT – SALTCOATS

The Chairman (J. L. Bailey) intimated that licenses to grocers would be granted on the understanding that they closed their premises at 10 o’clock p.m. If open after that they would run the risk of being prosecuted.

The application of George Patrick for a renewal of a public-house license for premises in Vernon Street, Saltcoats, was opposed by Mr. Tindal on behalf of the Young Men’s Christian Association and the Good Templars. Mr. Henderson, Kilmarnock, appeared for Mr. Patrick.

After hearing the agents, the Court refused the spirit license, but granted a license for wine and beer, same as Mr. Patrick formerly held. The spirt license was granted at the Quarter Sessions last year for the first time, on appeal from the local licensing court, which had refused the application.

Four transfers were granted, as were all the old licenses.

The application of E. W. Davies, grocer, for a license for porter and ale was refused.

LICENSING COURT – SALTCOATS

The justices met in the Town Hall – Mr. Arthur Guthrie presiding.

There were two applicants for licenses for public-house in Glasgow Street – namely Mrs. Fleming, the present tenant, and George Seth, who had obtained the house from the landlord. The Court decided to refuse the license to both applicants.

Mrs. Fleming applied for a public-house licence for new premises in Winton Buildings, Ardrossan Harbour, but was refused.

A proposal to withdraw the hotel license from the Crown Hotel, Saltcoats, and grant a public-house license instead, was defeated.

A motion was made to close all back doors of the public-houses in Saltcoats, but it was decided to get a report on the matter.

J. W. Keenan applied for a grocer’s license for new premises in Caledonia Road, Saltcoats, and was refused; he was granted a license for British wines.

WARNING TO BUILDERS

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday – before Colonel Dickie, Hon. Sheriff-Substitute – JOHN McKINNIE, builder, Raise Street, Saltcoats, was charged, at the instance of the Corporation of Irvine, with having, on the 23rd March at Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, used water belonging to the complainer for the purpose of mixing lime, for other than domestic purposes.

He pleaded guilty.

Mr. Curdie, writer, explained that the respondent was aware that in the case of a new building he had to apply for permission to tap the main and use the water, but in this case he was simply making alterations on an existing building, and he thought he was perfectly entitled to use the water available at the house.

Mr. Wilson, writer, Irvine, who represented the complainer, said that the accused had really no excuse at all. Only two or three weeks ago there had been a prosecution of a similar kind, and it was published in all the newspapers as a warning. Builders had been using the water in this way for years, and the Corporation of Irvine wished them to distinctly understand that the practice would not be allowed to continue.

Respondent was fined 5s, with 35s of expenses, or five days imprisonment.
