MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost Guthrie presiding.

It was agreed to resume negotiations with Captain Cuninghame of Auchenharvie in order that the part of the Braes on his estate be purchased for the town, and that the proprietors concerned be approached with a view to having a footbridge erected over the railway on a line with Seabank Street, so as to give improved access to the East Beach.

LIBERAL UNIONIST LECTURE

In the Lesser Town Hall, Saltcoats, a lecture illustrated by limelight views was delivered by Mr. John McCulloch, of the West of Scotland Liberal Unionist Association, on “What the Unionists have done for Ireland.”

There was a good attendance. Mr. Archibald Scott presided.

CONCERT

The Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston Choral and Orchestral Society gave their second concert for the season in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, on Tuesday evening when there was a large audience.

The chief item on the programme was Coleridge Taylor’s “Hiawatha,” parts 1 and 2.

The principals were Madame Annie Walker, soprano; Mr. Alfred Hoather, tenor; and Mr. Harry Dearth, bass.

The concert was entirely successful. Mr. W. G. Burgoyne, Ayr, was the conductor.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost McIsaac presiding.

Mr. Kerr suggested that the reading of the minutes of special meetings be delayed till they had disposed of the reports of the officials, as these minutes contained matters of a contentious nature.

After some discussion the minutes of all the meetings were read.

At the close of the ordinary business the question came up whether the minute of the meeting of 3rd instant by four commissioners after the Provost had dissolved the meeting and left should be entered in the minute book.

A long discussion took place.

The Town Clerk, in reply to a question, stated that he considered the meeting illegal.

Mr. Kerr said he had consulted various parties, and he was of the opinion that the procedure at the meeting before the Provost left was unconstitutional. If the after meeting was irregular, he thought the one that went before it was equally so. He recommended that a fresh minute be entered, and that they begin again.

Mr. Christie moved that the minute of the after meeting be entered. Bailie Duncan seconded.

Bailie Miller moved, seconded by Mr. Dunlop, that the minute be not inserted.

The amendment was carried by a majority.

Mr. Kerr inquired why the requisition for a meeting of the ratepayers had not been acted on.

The Provost replied that he could not call a meeting and grant the use of the Town Hall without laying the matter before the Commissioners. He had no opportunity of doing so till now.

The Clerk said he could not call a meeting; it would have been out of place for him to do so.

It was agreed to grant the hall for a meeting of the ratepayers.

In reply to a question, the Clerk said Mr. Christie would have to give notice of his motion regarding burgh officials and their salaries.

RAILWAY SEASON TICKETS TO COAST TOWNS

At a meeting of Saltcoats Town Council – Provost Blakely presiding – Mr. Boyle moved that the Depute Town Clerk be instructed to call a meeting of representatives for the burghs of Ardrossan, Kilwinning, and Irvine, to confer with the Council on the question of obtaining cheaper season tickets on the railways from Glasgow to Ayrshire coast towns.

He explained that this question was raised before but had been allowed to drop without any advantage being gained. He had been collecting information, and if a meeting was called he was prepared to take definite action.

The Depute Clerk was actually at the previous meeting of the joint burghs, and it was unanimously agreed to request him to arrange another meeting.

MOTORS AND DOGS

In Kilmarnock Small Debts Court yesterday Sheriff Mackenzie gave judgment in an action in which Mrs. Mary Boyd or McGivern, Quay Street, Saltcoats, sued WILLIAM GARNET CHRISTIE, West Point, Saltcoats, for £5 as loss sustained by her in respect that on December 20 last, on the High Road between Ardrossan and Stevenston, the defender’s motor car ran over and killed a fox terrier belong to pursuer.

His Lordship held that the motor car was being driven at an excessive speed in turning a corner, that the driver took no precaution to avoid the dog, while a disagreeable element in the case was that he did not stop after running down the dog, but drove right on.

The Sheriff gave decree for 30s, with expenses.
