CHORAL AND ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY’S CONCERT

On Tuesday night the Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston Choral and Orchestral Society gave a rehearsal of “Elijah” in the Town Hall, Saltcoats, before a crowded house.

Mr. W. G. Burgoyne, Ayr, acted as conductor. The singing choruses and solos were excellent, and the orchestra also did very good work. The soloists were Miss Perceval Allen, Miss Emily Harr, Mr. Fred Fallas, and Mr. Daniel Price.

DEATH OF REV. JAMES GIFFEN, OF SALTCOATS

We regret to announce the death of this gentleman, which occurred at Saltcoats, on Monday last.

The deceased, who was in his 66th year of his age, was born at Southend, Kintyre, on the 12th of August, 1804. His father, Mr. James Giffen, was for many years an elder in the Relief Church, Southend.

At the village school James, the youngest son, and the subject of this notice, made very satisfactory progress, and entered the University of Glasgow at the age of sixteen. After completing his University course he entered on the study of divinity in the Relief Hall, under the late Doctor Thomson. During several Hall vacations Mr. Giffen taught a school in Campbeltown.

In due course he was licensed as a preacher of the Gospel, and was soon called to be a colleague of the Rev. James Ewing, first pastor of the Relief Church, now the East U.P. Church, Saltcoats.

Mr. Giffen was ordained in Saltcoats on the 26th July, 1831. His colleague, Mr. Ewing, died in 1833, in his 79th year of age and 49th of his ministry, leaving him with the sole charge of the congregation, the duties of which he discharged with much acceptance till 1863, when failing health, occasion by an infection of the left lung and irregular action of the heart, induced him to resign his charge to the Presbytery.

He was succeeded by the Rev. George Philp, who was ordained to the East U.P. Church on 6th September, 1864.

The deceased gentleman was highly respected by a wide circle of attached friends, and much sympathy is felt and expressed for his sorrowing widow and family.

The funeral took place yesterday, and was largely attended by many sorrowing friends.

Sir,

A CONFUSION OF CHURCHES

The burgh of Saltcoats is in two parishes – Ardrossan and Stevenston. Ardrossan Church and manse are in Saltcoats burgh; New Ardrossan quoad sacra Church and manse are in Ardrossan burgh. Ardeer is in Stevenston parish. The United Presbyterians in Ardeer some time ago built a church and residence for their clergymen, who designates these Ardeer Church (of Scotland) and Ardeer Manse. Later on the minister of Stevenston erects a church at Ardeer, which is described as Ardeer Mission Church (of Scotland). Subscriptions were asked for, and I suppose, still are, for this mission church. I, as a member of the Church of Scotland, having no local knowledge, learn of this, naturally send my subscription to the parish minister of Ardeer for his church – a United Presbyterian Church. Last year the Free and United Presbyterian Churches ceased to exist.

In the University Almanack I now find the United Free Church of Scotland. Strange to relate, there is only one church described as such in the churches’ advertisements in the local papers – viz., South Beach United Free Church (of Scotland).

In Ardrossan burgh I find Park Church (of Scotland), St. John’s Church (of Scotland); in Saltcoats I notice Landsborough Church (of Scotland), Trinity Church (of Scotland), and Erskine Church (of Scotland). In Stevenston village there was a Free Church, but it appears to have disappeared, as I do not see any notice of such a church. This is all very satisfactory for the Church of Scotland.

I wonder if the same increase has taken place in other parishes.

I am &c.,
ALEXANDER WOOD.
